On Tuesday, December 2, 2025, shortly after 2 p.m. a Rockingham County Ambulance was involved in an accident while traveling southbound on US 29, near Joe Brown Drive, in Greensboro.
The EMS crew was conducting a non-emergent convalescent patient transport at the time of the accident and did not have their emergency lights and siren activated. While traveling south on US 29, a passenger vehicle entered US 29 from Joe Brown Dr. and drove into the pathway of the ambulance.
The ambulance struck the passenger vehicle and then came to rest against the guard rail on the southbound shoulder of US 29. Airbags on the ambulance deployed as a result of the accident and the unit experienced significant front-end damage.
The EMS unit had two Rockingham County EMS employees on board at the time of the accident, as well as one patient and one student from Rockingham Community College. No one on board the ambulance was injured, nor was the driver of the passenger vehicle.
Rockingham County EMS was deemed not at fault for the accident and the Greensboro Police Department is the investigating agency.
The EMS Crew involved was moved to a backup unit and was placed back in service by 6 p.m. on December 2. The EMS unit involved is currently out of service, as damages are assessed and the backup unit will remain in service to continue providing care for Rockingham County citizens.
Although this unit was not transporting an emergent patient at the time, it is common for Rockingham County EMS to transport patients to Moses Cone Hospital in Greensboro, the nearest trauma center, depending on patient needs and capacity at Annie Penn Hospital in Reidsville and UNC Rockingham in Eden.
Rockingham County would like to thank Guilford County EMS, the Greensboro Police Department and the Greensboro Fire Department for their quick response following the accident.
