🚫🔥 STATEWIDE BURN BAN IN EFFECT 🔥🚫

Due to increased wildfire risk and ongoing dry conditions, a statewide burn ban has been issued across all 100 counties beginning at 6 p.m. Saturday, March 28 and will remain in effect until further notice.

All open burning is prohibited—this includes yard debris, brush piles, and any previously permitted burns. No new burning permits will be issued during this time.

⚠️ Important reminders:
• Violations can result in fines and court costs
• You may be held responsible for firefighting expenses if your fire gets out of control
• Fires within 100 feet of an occupied dwelling are still be allowed until the Rockingham County Fire Marshal deems it necessary to issue a local burn ban.

With dry conditions and wildfire risk on the rise, it’s critical everyone does their part to prevent new fires. Local fire departments and law enforcement are assisting with enforcement.

📞 For questions, contact your county ranger or local fire marshal’s office.

‼️ INCREASED FIRE DANGER - North Carolina is heading into spring wildfire season and conditions are still much drier than they may seem, even with some rainfall in the forecast. That means fires can start faster, burn hotter, and spread quickly.

Most wildfires in our state are caused by people, and nearly half come from yard debris burns that get out of control. A fire can escape in seconds, especially on warm, windy days.

Before you burn:
• Check state and county rules and obtain a permit
• Avoid burning on dry or windy days
• Keep tools and water nearby
• Never use fuels like gasoline to start or speed up a fire
• Stay with your fire until it is completely out and cool to the touch

When camping or grilling, fully douse and stir embers until they’re cold. Never dispose of hot ashes in wooded areas.

Take a few extra minutes to ensure you burn safely, and when conditions are appropriate, because preventing wildfires begins with each of us doing our part.

The Storm Prediction Center has placed eastern Rockingham County under a Level 4 risk of severe weather tomorrow, while the western part of the county remains under a Level 3. Nonetheless, there is a strong possibility of severe weather on Monday, capable of damaging winds, tornadoes and large hail.

We encourage all of our residents to have a way to receive warnings and ensure each member of their family knows where their safe space would be in the event of a tornado warning. This would be in the center most part of their house, on the lowest level and in a room with no windows.

If there is a need for an emergency shelter, we will pass that information along. At this point a shelter has not been set up.

Should there be down trees or power lines, we encourage citizens to reach out to 9-1-1 and stay clear of any down power lines.

Citizens are encouraged to prepare today by securing things that could easily be blown around or potentially become a projectiles in a tornado or straight-line winds.

If the threat remains into Monday morning, the county Emergency Operations Center(EOC) will likely be activated to monitor conditions and emergency needs throughout the county. Emergency Services has also reached out to the American Red Cross in the event our area is heavily damaged.

Our website and social media will post weather updates as necessary and RoCo AlertNow text and phone alerts will share critical information to those who have registered. We encourage all citizens to register for RoCo Alert now as it is one of the fastest ways for us to share urgent information and can narrow the alerts by address. Citizens can register at www.RockinghamCountyNC.gov.

👉FIRE DANGER STILL HIGH FOR CENTRAL NC -- JAN. 16, 2026 – POSTPONE OUTDOOR BURNING👈

Due to low relative humidity, dry fuels and windy conditions, fire danger remains high across central North Carolina. Outdoor burning is NOT recommended. Dry grasses, dead leaves and other vegetative debris could easily ignite and spread quickly.

Discard cigarette butts, matches and other flammable materials in appropriate containers. Use extreme caution when handling potential ignition sources such as machinery and farm equipment.

Spread prevention, not wildfire.

On Tuesday, December 2, 2025, shortly after 2 p.m. a Rockingham County Ambulance was involved in an accident while traveling southbound on US 29, near Joe Brown Drive, in Greensboro.

The EMS crew was conducting a non-emergent convalescent patient transport at the time of the accident and did not have their emergency lights and siren activated. While traveling south on US 29, a passenger vehicle entered US 29 from Joe Brown Dr. and drove into the pathway of the ambulance.

The ambulance struck the passenger vehicle and then came to rest against the guard rail on the southbound shoulder of US 29. Airbags on the ambulance deployed as a result of the accident and the unit experienced significant front-end damage.

The EMS unit had two Rockingham County EMS employees on board at the time of the accident, as well as one patient and one student from Rockingham Community College. No one on board the ambulance was injured, nor was the driver of the passenger vehicle.

Rockingham County EMS was deemed not at fault for the accident and the Greensboro Police Department is the investigating agency.

The EMS Crew involved was moved to a backup unit and was placed back in service by 6 p.m. on December 2. The EMS unit involved is currently out of service, as damages are assessed and the backup unit will remain in service to continue providing care for Rockingham County citizens.

Although this unit was not transporting an emergent patient at the time, it is common for Rockingham County EMS to transport patients to Moses Cone Hospital in Greensboro, the nearest trauma center, depending on patient needs and capacity at Annie Penn Hospital in Reidsville and UNC Rockingham in Eden.

Rockingham County would like to thank Guilford County EMS, the Greensboro Police Department and the Greensboro Fire Department for their quick response following the accident.
