Take Heart Counseling & Equine Assisted Therapy Empowering individuals and families to find hope, healing and wholeness through therapeutic work with horses.

We provide Licensed Professional Counseling services in the Reading, Lancaster, and Lebanon areas of Pennsylvania. Equine Assisted Therapy is experiential and metaphorical in nature. Studies are proving it to be an effective alternative or addition to traditional therapy. Some sessions may be more learning-oriented, meaning you may practice skills which translate into other situations you may be facing. Some sessions will be more psychotherapeutic, in which deep healing through corrective experiences may occur. Working with horses provides an organic environment for experiencing, understanding, and discussing one's feelings and behaviors, in which individuals are challenged to grow and change. Session activities are tailored to fit a client's needs and will vary. Each session will end with a time of processing and discussing the activities. Non-therapeutic services and events offered at the Three Horse Ranch / Take Heart facility include: leadership-teamwork improvement, basic horsemanship and riding-lessons by highly qualified trainers, kids’ animal events (with mini-horses, a mini-donkey, and fainting goats), as well as fundraising events, such as public Open Barn Events, Worship at The Ranch events, and other special events as announced.

When you're not sure whether to laugh or cry

We can sit and watch the horses together
We can immerse ourselves in their world
We can watch as they eat, play, run, sleep, and just be
We can pause
We can feel the ground beneath us and the sun above us
We can hear nature around us
We can laugh at the funny things the horses do
We can marvel at their beauty
We can cry as we finally release what we've been holding onto for too long
We don't have to talk, in fact, we might not most of the time

Here is an update on how Finn is doing with his Mind-Body connection. We have gotten comfortable in the barn, and are working on feeling safe with brushing. There are times he disconnects but can come back to safety because of the foundation we started to build.

Rooted in Remembrance is a small, supportive group for young adults (20’s and 30’s) who have lost a parent and are learning how to live with that loss. Through time spent with horses, participants are invited to slow down, listen to their bodies, and find steadiness in the midst of grief. There is space to reflect, feel, and connect—without pressure to talk more than you’re comfortable with. This group offers a grounded, compassionate environment to honor your grief while gently finding meaning, connection, and a sense of rootedness again.

This spring we're offering two incredible horsemanship focus groups for equestrians at any level:

🌿 HORSE PSYCHOLOGY — Dive deep into the equine nervous system. Learn to read body language, interpret behavior, and communicate in a way that truly makes sense to your horse. Thursdays 6:00–7:30 pm starting April 13th.

🌿 LIBERTY & CONNECTION 101 — Build a foundation of trust, communication, and mutual respect through guided liberty exercises and groundwork. No force. No fear. Just real connection. Tuesdays 6:00–7:30 pm starting April 13th.

Both groups are 4 weeks, $350 (ask about our pay in full and refer a friend discount!), and facilitated by Equine Professional Kody Kerkeslager.

Our Story

Equine Assisted Therapy is experiential and metaphorical in nature. Studies are proving it to be an effective alternative or addition to traditional therapy. Some sessions may be more learning-oriented, meaning you may practice skills which translate into other situations you may be facing. Some sessions will be more psychotherapeutic, in which deep healing through corrective experiences may occur. Working with horses provides an organic environment for experiencing, understanding, and discussing one's feelings and behaviors, in which individuals are challenged to grow and change. Horses live "in the moment," and have distinct individual personalities. As herd animals, they are extremely relationship-oriented. Horses intuitively and honestly mirror the emotions of those around them, creating opportunities for us to increase self-awareness and practice building relationships. Bonding with horses facilitates a process in which clients can gain insight into their circumstances and how they currently interact in them through experience, as well as practice change in a forgiving environment. Along the way, clients develop confidence, patience, mutual respect, responsibility, problem-solving abilities, healthy coping techniques, and other life skills through interactions with the horses. Session activities are tailored to fit a client's needs and will vary. Each session will end with a time of processing and discussing the activities. Therapist Meagan Good, M.A has been inspired by horses throughout her life, and works to integrate Christian Counseling and the healing power of the horse-human bond through equine assisted therapy.
