Take Heart Counseling & Equine Assisted Therapy

Take Heart Counseling & Equine Assisted Therapy Empowering individuals and families to find hope, healing and wholeness through therapeutic work with horses.

We provide Licensed Professional Counseling services in the Reading, Lancaster, and Lebanon areas of Pennsylvania. Equine Assisted Therapy is experiential and metaphorical in nature. Studies are proving it to be an effective alternative or addition to traditional therapy. Some sessions may be more learning-oriented, meaning you may practice skills which translate into other situations you may be facing. Some sessions will be more psychotherapeutic, in which deep healing through corrective experiences may occur. Working with horses provides an organic environment for experiencing, understanding, and discussing one's feelings and behaviors, in which individuals are challenged to grow and change. Session activities are tailored to fit a client's needs and will vary. Each session will end with a time of processing and discussing the activities. Non-therapeutic services and events offered at the Three Horse Ranch / Take Heart facility include: leadership-teamwork improvement, basic horsemanship and riding-lessons by highly qualified trainers, kids’ animal events (with mini-horses, a mini-donkey, and fainting goats), as well as fundraising events, such as public Open Barn Events, Worship at The Ranch events, and other special events as announced.

You are not too much. You are just carrying too much.
Your nervous system is not broken. It is working overtime to keep you safe.
Together, we can help it find peace again.

At Take Heart Counseling, I work with adults who feel like they are doing everything right but still feel overwhelmed, exhausted, or emotionally stuck.

Our sessions take place outside, beside horses, with space to move and breathe.
You do not have to sit in a chair and talk the whole time.
You just have to show up and I will meet you there.

“After just one session - we’re seeing the first glimpses of getting our daughter back!”

🐎I’ll never forget that intake call – the way Mom’s voice sounded tired, but refusing to quit looking for the help her daughter needed. This family had tried multiple therapists, medications, and styles of therapy for their teenage daughter, but the daughter continued to retreat inward, collapsing in on herself, missing out on friendships, family who loved her, important teenage experiences like driving or prom… generally just not able to live life to the fullest. Depression was literally robbing her of life. Mom shared with me on the phone that they had tried everything and she was giving up hope – until she saw an ad for Take Heart.

🐎After the first session, Mom called me back with a new energy and excitement in her voice. Daughter had smiled, made eye contact, and shared (including some laughter!) about her first session with the horses! She even showed Mom a selfie she had taken with a horse. Mom hadn’t seen a smile or heard a laugh from Daughter in a few years.

Perfectionism.
Oh how I feel that from time to time. It's like a dark cloud hanging over my work. Should I put my self-worth into what I accomplished that day? Should I say “I am what I accomplished”?
That sounds exhausting and it sounds like a lonely place to be in.

What if instead I said “I did my best today and I am proud of myself”?

I wonder how that would shape my mindset to a more positive, productive outcome.

Perfectionism is often a function of shame. To believe I was not perfect enough sets me up for shameful thoughts and judgment from self and others. Notice how you speak to yourself and how it resonates in your day to day life.

At Take Heart we can help you recognize shame building and perfectionist tendencies and work on overcoming these moments.

Volunteer Appreciation Post!
We truly have an amazing group of volunteers are so grateful for all the hardwork they put in, from daily care of the therapy herd, to fall and spring baths, to special events, to showing up in all kinds of weather, to helping keep our horses fit and healthy and the barn a safe, clean, and inviting place for our clients.

Just a few pictures of some of our amazing volunteers. We truly appreciate having you all part of our barn family, it wouldn't be the same without you! Thank you for who you are.

Our Story

Equine Assisted Therapy is experiential and metaphorical in nature. Studies are proving it to be an effective alternative or addition to traditional therapy. Some sessions may be more learning-oriented, meaning you may practice skills which translate into other situations you may be facing. Some sessions will be more psychotherapeutic, in which deep healing through corrective experiences may occur. Working with horses provides an organic environment for experiencing, understanding, and discussing one's feelings and behaviors, in which individuals are challenged to grow and change. Horses live "in the moment," and have distinct individual personalities. As herd animals, they are extremely relationship-oriented. Horses intuitively and honestly mirror the emotions of those around them, creating opportunities for us to increase self-awareness and practice building relationships. Bonding with horses facilitates a process in which clients can gain insight into their circumstances and how they currently interact in them through experience, as well as practice change in a forgiving environment. Along the way, clients develop confidence, patience, mutual respect, responsibility, problem-solving abilities, healthy coping techniques, and other life skills through interactions with the horses. Session activities are tailored to fit a client's needs and will vary. Each session will end with a time of processing and discussing the activities. Therapist Meagan Good, M.A has been inspired by horses throughout her life, and works to integrate Christian Counseling and the healing power of the horse-human bond through equine assisted therapy.
