Representation in mental health is necessary.

Only 5% of the U.S. psychology workforce is Black or African American.

That gap affects trust, access, and how safe someone feels seeking support. When providers reflect the communities they serve, stigma decreases and culturally responsive care becomes more attainable.

Advancing Black mental health equity means expanding opportunity, mentorship, and representation across the field.

Psychological testing hasn’t always been unbiased

The work of Dr. Herman George Canady helped us see that.

This Black History Month, we honor a psychologist who challenged inequities in intelligence testing and highlighted how race and social context influence assessment outcomes.

His work continues to shape conversations around fair, culturally responsive mental health care.

Mental wellness and love are deeply connected.

Valentine’s Day can bring up many emotions: joy, gratitude, longing, grief, hope, or reflection. However you’re experiencing this season, your feelings are valid.

Healthy love is not limited to romantic relationships. It includes friendships, chosen family, community, boundaries, healing, and the relationship you have with yourself.

Today, we invite you to practice intentional love: toward others, and toward yourself.

The seats we sit in today exist because someone refused to remain outside the door.

This Black History Month, we honor Dr. Francis Cecil Sumner, the first Black American to earn a Ph.D. in psychology.

His leadership created pathways for generations of Black psychologists and clinicians to follow.

At Iama Center, we’re grateful to continue building on the doors he helped open.

Black mental health advocacy was built by pioneers.

This Black History Month, we honor Dr. Alvin F. Poussaint, a trailblazing psychiatrist who helped bring attention to the impact of racism and systemic inequities on the mental health of Black Americans.

His work challenged stigma within our communities and pushed the mental health field toward culturally responsive, equitable care.

At Iama Center, we see his legacy reflected in our commitment to dignified, context-aware, community-centered care.

Choosing a therapist is a deeply personal decision

Cultural understanding can influence how safe you feel sharing your experiences, how much you explain, and how supported you feel throughout the process.

There is no single “right” therapist, only what feels aligned for you. Taking time to consider what helps you feel seen, respected, and comfortable is part of caring for your mental wellness.

💜 Healthy relationships should feel safe, respectful, and supportive.

February is Teen Dating Violence Awareness Month, and throughout this month we’ll be focusing on education, prevention, and conversations that support teens in recognizing healthy vs. unhealthy relationship patterns.

Teen dating violence can show up in many forms, including emotional, verbal, digital, and physical harm, and awareness is a critical step toward early intervention, safety, and healing.

Psychological resilience isn’t about “being strong” all the time.
—
It’s about how we adapt, recover, and continue moving forward when life shifts, stress shows up, or things don’t go as planned.

Resilience can look like asking for support, learning new coping skills, or giving yourself permission to rest and reset. And the good news?

It’s not something you either have or don’t, it’s something that can be developed over time.
