My 1/2 marathon progress this year. Super pleased with 15 minute improvement πŸ€—πŸŽ‰

I changed how I thought about training. I focused on recovery. Started with tracking food and REALLY paying attention to what actually helps me stay full. And what foods help me recover fast, starchy carbohydrates with lots of lean protein πŸ˜‰

Then I discovered Garmin tells me how long a run is going to take to recover from. Amazing tool! Just make sure your heart rate zones are set correctly. When I first started Garmin would tell me it would take 4 days to recover from a 5 mile run 🫣😱😬 So I started only doing 3 mile runs. Till my recovery window got shorter. Then I started adding miles. I learned trail running gave me a faster recovery time.

My first half this year I was running 2 days a week because doing a hilly long run I needed more time to recover. By the time I got to Smuttynose Rockfest I was running 3 days a week. Long run, trail run, tempo run.

For Frosty Half Marathon, I still was running 3 days a week. But I started working on pushing the pace on 5 mile hilly runs. I have a 4 day recovery suggestion from Garmin after that race.

Now I’m figuring out which spring 1/2 I’d like to do. I’ll be working on steeper hills this time. They still get me 😬 I have a 10k loop I avoid by my house because of steep hills πŸ˜‚ That route going to be my winter project. Hills pay the bills

Winter solstice is here. Shortest day of the year and tomorrow the days will be getting longer, YEAH! This winter transition is a challenge for me. I feel like I need to work extra hard to stay moving, never mind doing anything extra.

How do I get going when I'm feeling unmotivated? I do the best I can by taking made up chores off my plate. Example I work out 3 days a week instead of my usual 5. I do enjoy cooking but I make super simple meals. Any in person shopping I do it's all close by. No extra running around. It's a good season to focus on working smarter, not harder.

Todays a good day to rest. Drinking warm tea/coffee. Stay in comfy soft clothes. And cook something easy for dinner. I'm making split pea with ham soup in the crock pot. I'll make my way to the gym at some point. Then the rest of the day will be taking my time getting ready for Christmas Day.

Fast twitch muscle fibers that prevent tripping and falling are the first to loose strength as we get older 😬😱😳 But don’t worry you can fix this πŸŽ‰ Jumping, skipping, sprinting, hiking, trail running are just a few different options. Let’s not be elderly people that drag our feet.
