One of the most powerful chains of addiction is self rejection. This chain takes hold because the journey of addiction is more than a behavioral issue, more than a biological issue, it is a progressive spiritual identity change. Yes, drug use is a gateway into the spiritual world. Refusal to acknowledge this will prove to hinder full recovery. Self rejection looks like this.Your friends say you've gone too far, society applies the labels, and your family pulls away, Your new friends are not true friends, they are only like you, co-dependent. You begin to believe that even God has rejected you. But he hasn't, you have rejected yourself. You believe that you are unworthy, not good enough, and hopeless. This is the real bottom, the darkest place of human existence. This is where a new journey must begin. The gospel of Jesus Christ is called a light shining in the darkness. This is when he rolls up his sleeves to show you that you have great value, a grand purpose, and a place in his heart. This is where he screams "I have not rejected you! I carried your burdens before you did, it's time for you to give them back to me. I will heal the wounds, I will restore relationships, I will make you whole again." For those of you who love an addict, seek out support. Shame ends when you ask for help. Connect with people you can trust to have this conversation with. People that will walk beside you and show you some real options.

The Christmas Gift
“But unto every one of us is given grace according to the measure of the gift of Christ.”
Merry Christmas!
We at H.I.M. call this gift a “space for grace.” It's what we pray for those we love who are bound in addictions. Remarkably, these addictions, though often grievous, have a good purpose through revealing the deeper problem, a dark area of the soul. The exposing and identifying of these dark places by the light of God's grace is a gift. You see, if left hidden, the journey to wholeness is blocked and we are hindered from ever freely walking on the pathway of God's great purpose. The space is ground in which the seed of the revelation of the Father's love can take root. Our prayer is for an appointed moment that the heart will be open and can receive it

This space for grace can also be called a “treasure in the trial” for those who love the one who is bound. By this gift, the sense of despair can be replaced by hope, and the words of the prophet Isaiah come alive. “The people that walked in darkness have seen a great light: they that dwell in the land of the shadow of death, upon them hath the light shined.” Don't be distracted by how things may appear in this life. Hunger for the presence of God to be revealed both upon yourself, and upon the ones you love.

“For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder; and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counselor, the mighty God, the everlasting Father, the Prince of Peace.” Isaiah 9:6

Found this. thiught it was great. Me: Okay, God, here's the thing. I'm scared. I'm trying not to be, but I am.
God: I know. Want to talk about it?
Me: Do we need to? I mean, you already know.
God: Let's talk about it anyway... We've done this before.
Me: I know, I just feel like I should be bigger or stronger or something by now.
God: *waiting patiently, unhurried, undistracted, never annoyed.
Me: Okay. So, I'm afraid I'll do everything I can to protect my family and it won't be enough. I'm afraid of someone I love dying. I'm afraid the world won't go back to what it was before. I'm afraid my life is always going to feel a little bit unsettled.
God: Anything else?
Me: EVERYTHING ELSE.
God: Remember how your son woke up the other night and came running down the hall to your bedroom?
Me: Yes.
God: You were still awake, so when you heard him running, you started calling out to him before he even got to you... remember? Do you remember what you called out to him?
Me: I said, "You're okay! You're okay! You're okay! I'm here."
God: Why did you call to him? Why didn't you just wait for him to get to your room?
Me: Because I wanted him to know that I was awake, and I heard him, and he didn't have to be afraid until he reached the end of the dark hallway.
God: Exactly. I hear you, my child. I hear your thoughts racing like feet down the dark hallway. There's an other side to all of this. I'm there already. I've seen the end of it. And I want you to know right here as you walk through it all, you're okay. I haven't gone to sleep, and I won't.
Me: *crying. Can we sit together awhile? Can we just sit here a minute before I go back to facing it all?
God: There's nothing I'd love more.
