One of the most powerful chains of addiction is self rejection. This chain takes hold because the journey of addiction is more than a behavioral issue, more than a biological issue, it is a progressive spiritual identity change. Yes, drug use is a gateway into the spiritual world. Refusal to acknowledge this will prove to hinder full recovery. Self rejection looks like this.Your friends say you've gone too far, society applies the labels, and your family pulls away, Your new friends are not true friends, they are only like you, co-dependent. You begin to believe that even God has rejected you. But he hasn't, you have rejected yourself. You believe that you are unworthy, not good enough, and hopeless. This is the real bottom, the darkest place of human existence. This is where a new journey must begin. The gospel of Jesus Christ is called a light shining in the darkness. This is when he rolls up his sleeves to show you that you have great value, a grand purpose, and a place in his heart. This is where he screams "I have not rejected you! I carried your burdens before you did, it's time for you to give them back to me. I will heal the wounds, I will restore relationships, I will make you whole again." For those of you who love an addict, seek out support. Shame ends when you ask for help. Connect with people you can trust to have this conversation with. People that will walk beside you and show you some real options.
