Are you an over-apologizer? It’s easy to get in the habit of apologizing for EVERYTHING, even when it’s something you shouldn’t be sorry for (like an honest mistake, or just being HUMAN).
When used in the correct context, apologizing is a great way to mend relationships or show remorse.
However, when we do this too much it can become a toxic habit that can diminish self image.
Before you say “I’m sorry”, see if you can replace the “I’m sorry” with a statement of thanks. Here are some examples:
Instead of: “I’m sorry I forgot to do my share of the housework yesterday”
Try: “Thanks so much for picking up the slack”
Instead of: “I’m sorry for getting the date of our meeting wrong”
Try: “Thank you for being so flexible when I forgot the date of the meeting”
Instead of: “I’m so sorry for complaining”
Try: “Thanks for listening to me vent”
The first step to overcoming your over-apologizing is to recognize it and pause to think when you feel an “I’m sorry” coming on.
