In my work, I often hear people say, “I didn’t realize how burned out I was until I hit the wall and felt completely depleted.”
If that sounds familiar, you’re not alone.
Sometimes stress quietly becomes burnout—like driving down the highway on three tires, low on air: still moving forward, but barely.
For many people juggling work, family, and caregiving, the early signs are often subtle:
🔹 Tight shoulders or frequent headaches
🔹 Feeling more cynical or irritable than usual
🔹 Broken sleep or feeling emotionally drained
🔹 Losing interest in things you usually enjoy
Stress isn’t “bad” on its own. But sometimes it takes on a life of its own, feeding burnout and tipping into depression. Catching it early makes a big difference because you have more options to intervene and change course before emotional exhaustion becomes entrenched.
💡 Recognizing the signs early gives you more room to adjust, recalibrate, and find what actually works for you before burnout takes hold. And if burnout is already present, meaningful recovery is still possible with time, support, and changes that protect your energy going forward.
This is Part 2 of my three-part series, When Stress Turns into Burnout, Anxiety, or Depression.
In Part 3, I’ll share practical ways to begin rebuilding resilience and emotional capacity.
