I remember one time a client of mine was trying to tell me that dry needling is different than acupuncture.

My response was originally calm and simple where I mentioned that dry needling is a subset of acupuncture where it limits the acupuncture practice to muscles, connective tissue, and nerves vs. the whole 'system'.

She proceeded to tell me that I was wrong and my training was not as extensive as a practitioner that dry needles - whereas my training was 3 years + 2 national board exams, dry needlers can purchase a certification with a 3-day course.

Who do you trust?

Any of these sound familiar??

"I'm too old to get in shape"

"I used to look good in my younger years"

"Oh they're healthy because they have better genetics"

You are NEVER too hold to try. A professor of mine would say as long as you got 's***k', (or some vitality of life), you can improve your health.

Your life is your brain, bones, organs, and muscles and how YOU choose to treat them.

Below is a short from one of the greatest minds ever to speak upon the field of health- a personal inspiration of mine to continue improving.

The reflexes involved may not yet be fully explained, but if we cling to the archaic explanations, however colorful and attractive they sound, we will never uncover the full potential of this system.

Did you know that approximately 80% of all people suffer from low back pain at some point in their lives? It’s no surprise that back pain is also the most popular reason people seek help from their doctors, massage therapists, and/or acupuncturists.

Low back pain can stem from any type of trauma or injury that has never full recovered. It can even be due to the weather and climate changes. Or simply from overworking and getting older. Doesn’t sound fun right?

If we want to fight off this pain, we must take care of ourselves! Consider trying out these acupressure points to reduce muscle tension and release endorphins that act as the body’s natural pain reliever. Be gone pain!

BL10 – For this one, you may have to borrow a friend’s finger or hook your thumb into it. This muscle is located in the upper trapezius region. You may feel lots of relief here in the head and lower back!

BL40 – Lets warm our backs up!!! Woooo hooo you will feel this one…this fun point is located in the back of the knee. It is right between the two hamstring tendons and lays OVERTOP the sciatic nerve and the popliteal artery, so watch your pressure!!!

SI3 – Distal point for low back pain! Easy to do while sitting or waiting in line – this point is along the pinky finger about halfway between the tip of the finger and the base of the wrist.

GB30 – Located on the back of the outer hip embedded in the gluteus maximus muscle, if you push deeper, you will get into the pelvic floor stabilizer muscles (that we tend to forget about). Hold for 30-60 seconds when feeling tight.

GB34 – Located on the outside of the leg, this muscle is embedded in the fibularis longus muscle, just below the outside lower leg bone. It may be a little sensitive, but acupuncturists REALLY love this point for pain!

It’s that time of year where the weather is changing and it’s getting cold! Say good-bye to b***y shorts, sun tan lotions, and ducks in the ā€œvā€ formation. It’s the time where we say hi to scarves, pumpkin spice lattes and tissues filled with all sorts of germ or cold-induced goop. Right now is the time of year where we need to protect ourselves.

In Chinese medicine, our immunity is a barrier that protects our body from harmful pathogenic factors that can cause illness or disease. When you overwork yourself, extend yourself to the point of exhaustion or are exposed to germs and viruses, the first line of defense is weakened and unbalanced. In these conditions we become more prone to allergies, asthma, colds, and skin problems.

The goal here is to prevent illness before it even occurs by supporting and strengthening the body via the immune system. It is time to make our bodies and minds stronger so our ā€œWei Qiā€ (Chinese Immunity) is ready to defeat any evil that decides to enter into our bodies!

Doing acupressure points with your fingers for 30-60 seconds can stimulate and promote circulation within your body. Here are some amazing points to support and boost your immunity!

Remember it’s not rocket science, it’s Bodywork Science!

Tickle in your throat?

Don’t think it’s going around? Well, just in case: a tickle in your throat can be easily explained (or even reduced to), movement of your body’s energies going in the wrong direction.

Coughing, in the language of Traditional Chinese Medicine, is simply a failure of lung energy not being able to descend properly and simply ā€˜floats’ upwards causing you to cough. The lungs are considered to be a ā€˜delicate’ organ, easily affected by overwork, excessive worry or mental activity, irregular dietary habits, and environmental conditions (heat and dryness).

Coughs are common and can become painful for various reasons, so don’t let your coughs prolong! If left untreated, it can harm one’s energy and disrupt the healthy flow of energy crucial for maintaining good health.

Here are some acupressure points you can do on yourself for cough relief!

Some good information for bodyworkers and also people that enjoy breathing -

Current BodySci peoples- does this maneuver look/sound familiar? If I've worked on you before, chances are good that we went over breathing.

The results of this study are positive, but we still have work to do!

Stretching of respiratory muscles is included in what is known as manual therapy techniques. A diaphragm stretching technique has shown beneficial effects on respiratory function and thoracic and spinal mobility in healthy subjects. However, its effects on asthmatic patients have not been evaluated.
