Dark Circles, “allergic shiners” or venous pooling are the dark, bruise like circles that many children (and adults) develop under their eyes and can be a symptom of airway dysfunction.

Sometimes dark circles develop with an illness or a few days of late nights. Typically, this is not a concern if the dark circles resolve once you feel better or catch up on sleep. Chronic dark circles may indicate a change in structure from years of improper breathing and poor oral posture. Mouth breathing and low tongue posture lead to the development of narrow jaws which results in an under developed mid face. This narrowing causes a reduction in the space available for venous blood flow under the eyes resulting in poor blood flow and an accumulation of deoxygenated blood in the veins. Allergies, inflammation and nasal obstruction can also contribute to the dark circles as blood from the facial veins cant drain properly and pools under the eyes.

This little lady has completed has completed her PRE-PROCEDURE myo and is now ready for her release! This suction hold is the result of our patient's hard work and effort and is KEY to an optimal release procedure. We require all of our patients to do myofunctional therapy as it is not enough to just improve structure (release/ expansion). Structure and function must both be addressed for best outcomes and long term stability.

Why 3D CBCT?

Because we don't want to guess when it comes to your child's health. This imaging is critical to informed and personalized treatment plans. While radiation exposure is a real concern, the machine we use allows us to take an image safely with less radiation exposure than a flight from NYC to LA.

The best part of what we get to do is building relationships with our sweet patients and their wonderful families. We started working with this little girl when she was about 3.5 years old. From our first digital impression to a few road bumps along the way, she has risen up to every challenge and completed everything we have asked of her with a smile on her face!

Her bright little light shines every time she visits, always greeting us with a hug and often a note or picture. She will soon be "graduating" and even though our visits won't be as frequent, she, like all of our young patients, has made an impression on us that will not soon be forgotten. We are so proud of her and we know wonderful things are ahead. Keep shining, V!

Back from a wonderful weekend learning with my mentor, Dr. Bill Hang. Dr. Hang is a pioneer in early childhood health-centered orthodontics and he has been a central part of my journey in learning to do this work I love so much.

Delivery Day for a very special patient! Arch development for young children can feel overwhelming. We work to make each step of our process as easy and fun as possible for our patients.

We provide parents with a “what to expect” handout and we spend time reviewing appliance activation and instructions so that parents can head home with confidence. Our patients receive their “tooth tools” or “tooth jewelry” along with a sticker chart and lots of love and support. We know that this work is a big deal for our little patients and their parents and we are here to support and guide them along the way.

It sounds a little silly but nasal breathing is critical for systemic health. Remember, the nose is for breathing and the mouth is for eating.
