February is dental month for horses and small animals. Don’t forget to keep your animals mouths in top shape for health and performance! Cool post from another veterinary clinic of a wild horses skull found.

Importance of equine dental care: When people ask “what do horses in the wild do without regular dental care?” Here is the answer. Some have dental issues naturally. This is a skull of a wild horse found here in Santa Fe, NM with obvious signs of dental disease that may have contributed to this horse’s death. The upper 09 tooth was decayed and infected with resulting bone loss around the tooth and overgrowth of the opposing lower 09 tooth. Regular dental care and advanced nutrition, as well as vaccinations and parasite control have resulted in significant improvement in quality of life and longevity in domestic horses, allowing them to commonly live into their late twenties and even 30’s. Wild horses have a significantly shorter natural lifespan. Regular dental care, including oral examinations is critical to long term health of horses and also improved
Performance for riding horses. Wild horses may not have regular dental care but they also live a very different lifestyle and eat very different diets than domestic horses and they are not asked to wear a bridle and be ridden........and their lifespan is much shorter than domestic horses. Thank you to a great client for sharing this treasure with me!!!
