Today is a big day for sports. It’s MLB Opening Day, the Sweet 16, and there are NBA games too. Everyone is talking about it. People are making predictions and picking who they think will win. The energy is high and a lot is going on.

But days like this can also create pressure. It can feel like you should be betting too. It can feel like you’re missing out if you’re not. What starts as fun can turn into risk.

You might win once.
Maybe even twice.

But then things can change.

A loss can make you want to win your money back. Soon, it’s not about the game anymore. It becomes about the next chance, the next bet, the next “lock.” And there is always another game, another chance to keep going.

Every month, thousands of dollars are quietly disappearing from our community through video gambling machines, and almost nobody talks about it. The February 2026 Illinois Gaming Board report shows something crazy: in one month alone, Elgin’s 176 machines ran over $11.8 million. After payouts, fees, and taxes, more than $1.1 million was just gone.

That’s money not going to groceries
Not going to rent
Not going to families

It slips away slowly. A few spins doesn’t feel like much, but it adds up into something way bigger than just entertainment.

Two companies running just 16 machines were tied to over $312,000 in losses in one month. And when you really look at it, it’s not random. These machines are built so the longer you stay, the more you lose.

💔 Why This Matters for Elgin

Video gambling hits people’s stability.

It affects mental health
It takes time away from family and real life

And the worst part is where these machines are placed. Restaurants, bars, everyday spots. You mix stress, boredom, or routine with easy access, and it becomes way easier to fall into.

💛 Dundee Cares Stands With Carpentersville

Our hearts are with the twenty-three families who were displaced after the Meadowdale Apartments fire early Saturday morning. We are grateful that there were no serious injuries, and we want the community to know that we are here for anyone who needs support.

How to Help:
You can help by donating to the American Red Cross and noting that your contribution is for the Carpentersville apartment fire relief. Gift cards to grocery stores, big box stores, gas stations, and restaurants are also extremely helpful for families as they work to replace essential items. You may also donate food to the D300 Food Pantry, which is actively supporting the affected families. Officials are asking the community not to donate any additional clothing at this time because enough clothing has already been received.

If you were personally impacted, Dundee Cares is available to help connect you with resources and ongoing community support. ABC Behavioral Change Counseling provides case management services that are funded by the Dundee Township Mental Health Board, and our team is here to assist with housing needs, resource navigation, mental health support, and overall stability services.
