At Vanguard, Dr. Bartl specializes in primary care and dental care for dogs and cats. But check out this specialty case she had the chance to do!

Last week, Dr.Bartl traveled to Virginia to treat a very special patient at the zoo- an American Black Bear!🐻
Last year she performed a root canal to save this bear's canine tooth, and we're happy to share that the tooth is doing great after her recent recheck! The bear is now getting ready for hibernation with healthy teeth!🦷

Arthramid is a long-lasting joint injection that helps improve joint function, mobility and comfort, so your dog can enjoy life again. It works by supporting the repair of the joint lining, helping to restore healthy lubrication, cushioning and function for long-term relief.

Here’s why vets (and dogs!) love Arthramid:
✔️ 85% of dogs show relief from osteoarthritis symptoms
✔️ 63% reduce or stop other pain medications
✔️ Safe, long-lasting, and effective at all stages of OA

Whether your dog is in the early stages or already showing signs of joint pain, early intervention makes all the difference!

Digatherm, a thermal imaging camera that can help our doctors
diagnose a range of problems.

This technology gives us the insight to find potential issues with
your pets such as arthritis, inflammation of the joints, and pain.
This imaging shows us temperature changes that pinpoint where your
pets pain is located!

The NMES machine is very effective in stimulating and maintaining muscle
in many of our patients like Fitz!

How NMES Helps Neurologic Patients:
🐾Muscle Activation: NMES uses gentle electrical pulses to make the
muscles contract and relax.
🐾Preventing Atrophy: The activation process allows Sirius’s muscles
to go through an aerobic workout and maintain strength.
🐾Retraining the Brain: NMES helps maintain muscle mass and promotes
the re-establishment of the nerve-to-muscle connection, which is key
to regaining mobility after a spinal injury.

Halloween is full of treats and spooky fun, but it can also bring new
risks for pets. Keep them safe with these essential tips!

1. Watch the Treats! – Many Halloween candies, like chocolate and
sugar-free options, are toxic to pets. Keep treats out of reach and
have pet-safe goodies on hand.
2. Beware of Wrappers & Decorations – Candy wrappers and seasonal
decor like pumpkins can be harmful if eaten. Clean up wrappers and
keep tempting decor out of reach.
3. Limit Outdoor Time – Keep pets inside on Halloween night to avoid
loud sounds and visitors. The unfamiliar commotion can be unsettling.
4. Trick-or-Treat Safety – Secure pets when opening the door for
trick-or-treaters. A safe, quiet space can help them stay calm.

As Halloween approaches, it’s important to remember that what’s a treat for us can be very dangerous for our pets. Chocolate is highly toxic to dogs and can cause serious illness—even in small amounts.

What you need to know:
🚫 No Chocolate for Pets – Chocolate contains theobromine & caffeine, which can lead to vomiting, diarrhea, rapid breathing, tremors, or even seizures.
👁️ Keep Candy Out of Reach – Dogs are experts at sniffing out sweets. Store candy securely.
🗑️ Watch the Trash – Wrappers can cause dangerous blockages if eaten.
🐾 Know the Signs – Restlessness, panting, trembling, excessive thirst, or increased heart rate may signal chocolate toxicity.

Every once in a while, a little support from a friend can make all the difference. Oliver continues to acclimate to the rehabilitation process and remains somewhat uncertain about the experience. His brother, Maurice, who has been attending therapy for various injuries over the past few years, happened to have his session on the same day. To help Oliver feel more at ease, we conducted their sessions together so Maurice could offer some encouragement. The added support had a noticeable effect! Oliver demonstrated reduced anxiety throughout the session and even chose to participate more willingly, including accepting treats once he saw his brother enjoying them.
