Vitamin D is an essential nutrient that supports bone and muscle structure, immune function, cardiovascular health, hormone balancing, healthy skin, a good mood, and more.*

The FDA recommends 800 IU daily as a baseline.2 For bone health alone, Mayo Clinic recommends daily vitamin D supplementation of 600 IU for everyone between the ages of 1 and 70, and 800 IU for those older than 70.4

While these are conservative recommendations, it is likely that if you are already low in vitamin D, then these amounts won’t be sufficient to bring your blood level up to what is considered sufficient – 32 ng/mL by conventional standards and 40 ng/mL or higher for optimal Essentia Health Fargo Marathon

What if one of the most powerful brain health interventions isn’t a supplement, a drug, or a biohack, but a 30-minute walk?

A randomized clinical trial in the Journal of Sport and Health Science assigned adults ages 26 to 58 to follow an aerobic exercise program targeting 150 minutes per week for 12 months. On MRI, their brains shifted to look about 0.95 years “younger” than the control group on a brain-age algorithm.

That might not sound dramatic, but brain aging is cumulative, and small shifts add up.

What I love about this study is the age range. These benefits showed up in early and midlife, not just later decades.

Exercise likely supports brain health through multiple pathways, including improved cerebral blood flow and neuroplasticity, although the exact mechanisms behind the brain-age shift are still being worked out.

Thirty minutes, five days a week. Move at a pace where you notice your breathing change.

The reason our office uses soft tissue therapies such as FAKTR AKA Graston with strengthening exercises for shoulder pain is because it gets better and more long-term results.

Multiple research papers have shown that combining manual therapy with exercise had a significant advantage over exercise alone for rotator cuff injuries.

Treating the injured area with manual therapy tools such as Graston to improve blood flow, promote healing, and break up adhesions along with strengthening exercises to improve the strength and ability for the rotator cuff to carry a load helps improve healing and get long-term relief.

This week I wanted to share 3 of my favorite shoulder strengthening exercises.

With shoulder pain it's important to progressively increase the load or strength in the shoulder and rotator cuff muscles.

Many times we add these home exercises to soft tissue treatment AKA Graston to not only improve the shoulder strength, but promote healing and break up any adhesions or issue in the muscle and fascia.
