This cycle can feel familiar for many people living with frequent headaches or migraines.

Pain medication brings relief — but only temporarily. As the medication wears off, the headache returns, often leading to taking more medication just to get through the day. Over time, this pattern can keep the headache cycle going.

This isn’t about doing anything “wrong.”
It’s a signal that the brain may need more support than acute medication alone.

Breaking the cycle often means stepping back, looking at the full picture, and building a plan that supports long-term headache control — not just short-term relief.

Do you ever wake up with a migraine already in full swing?

You’re not alone. 𝐔𝐩 𝐭𝐨 𝐡𝐚𝐥𝐟 𝐨𝐟 𝐦𝐢𝐠𝐫𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐞 𝐚𝐭𝐭𝐚𝐜𝐤𝐬 𝐡𝐚𝐩𝐩𝐞𝐧 𝐛𝐞𝐭𝐰𝐞𝐞𝐧 𝟒–𝟖 𝐀𝐌, and these early-morning attacks are often harder to treat.

Why? Migraine medications work best when taken early. If an attack starts while you’re asleep, it may already be advanced by the time you wake up — making oral treatments less effective.

Early-morning migraines can be influenced by many factors, including:
• Poor or disrupted sleep
• Dehydration or low blood sugar overnight
• Caffeine or medication withdrawal
• Stress let-down
• Jaw clenching or teeth grinding
• Lower levels of the body’s natural pain relievers in the early morning hours

Other headache disorders can also cause people to wake up in pain, which is why evaluation matters.

If morning migraines are frequent, there are options — including adjusting treatment timing or medication routes — to help improve control.

𝑾𝒉𝒚 𝒅𝒐 𝒉𝒆𝒂𝒅𝒂𝒄𝒉𝒆𝒔 𝒉𝒊𝒕 𝒂𝒓𝒐𝒖𝒏𝒅 𝒚𝒐𝒖𝒓 𝒑𝒆𝒓𝒊𝒐𝒅? 🤔

If you’ve noticed that headaches or migraines tend to show up before or during your period, there’s a biological reason — and you’re definitely not alone.

Many people who menstruate experience 𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐨𝐝-𝐫𝐞𝐥𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐝 𝐡𝐞𝐚𝐝𝐚𝐜𝐡𝐞𝐬 𝐨𝐫 𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐮𝐚𝐥 𝐦𝐢𝐠𝐫𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐬 because of changes in hormone levels. Around menstruation, 𝐥𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐥𝐬 𝐨𝐟 𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐨𝐠𝐞𝐧 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐠𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐨𝐧𝐞 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐚𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐢𝐫 𝐥𝐨𝐰𝐞𝐬𝐭 𝐥𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐥𝐬, and that can make the brain more sensitive to migraine triggers.

Hormones like estrogen are deeply connected to brain chemistry and pain pathways — when they drop quickly before your period, it can increase the likelihood of a migraine attack.

That’s why you might see patterns like:
• Headaches starting a few days before your period begins
• Headaches during the first few days of your period
• Stronger or more frequent migraines around your cycle

Understanding this pattern can help you plan ahead and talk with your provider about preventive strategies and personalized care. Your body is signaling, and that’s information — not weakness. 💜

Did you know migraine prevention can start earlier than most people think?

The International Headache Society recommends considering preventive migraine treatment as early as 2–4 migraine days per month — not just when migraines become frequent or chronic.

Why does this matter?
Early, proactive treatment can help reduce attack frequency, severity, and disability, and may lower the risk of migraines becoming chronic over time.

Migraine is a neurologic disease.
Treating it early isn’t “doing too much” — it’s protecting your brain.

Early care can mean better long-term outcomes.

Abdominal migraine is a recognized migraine variant that causes 𝐫𝐞𝐜𝐮𝐫𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐞𝐩𝐢𝐬𝐨𝐝𝐞𝐬 𝐨𝐟 𝐦𝐨𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐭𝐨 𝐬𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐞 𝐚𝐛𝐝𝐨𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐩𝐚𝐢𝐧, most often around the belly button. It’s more common in children, but can also affect adults — and children are typically well between episodes.

𝐒𝐲𝐦𝐩𝐭𝐨𝐦𝐬 𝒎𝒂𝒚 𝐢𝐧𝐜𝐥𝐮𝐝𝐞:
• Dull or aching abdominal pain
• Nausea or vomiting
• Pallor (appearing pale)
• Loss of appetite
• Sensitivity to light or sound

Because abdominal pain has many possible causes, careful evaluation is essential. Conditions such as 𝐈𝐁𝐒, 𝐜𝐲𝐜𝐥𝐢𝐜 𝐯𝐨𝐦𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐬𝐲𝐧𝐝𝐫𝐨𝐦𝐞, 𝐚𝐩𝐩𝐞𝐧𝐝𝐢𝐜𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐬, 𝐢𝐧𝐟𝐥𝐚𝐦𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐲 𝐛𝐨𝐰𝐞𝐥 𝐝𝐢𝐬𝐞𝐚𝐬𝐞, 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐮𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐫𝐲 𝐨𝐫 𝐤𝐢𝐝𝐧𝐞𝐲 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐝𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬 must be considered and ruled out.

That’s why collaborative care matters. We value working alongside trusted pediatric partners like Dakota Pediatric Associates, who provide comprehensive pediatric and pediatric GI care in the Fargo-Moorhead area. Together, we can ensure GI causes are addressed while also identifying migraine variants when appropriate.

Abdominal migraine is something we evaluate and treat at Transcend — because not all migraines cause head pain, and kids deserve answers.

Diagnosis typically includes a detailed history and neurologic exam, a comprehensive eye exam to look for optic nerve swelling, brain imaging, and a lumbar puncture to measure opening pressure.

Treatment may include medications to lower pressure, repeat lumbar punctures when needed, lifestyle support with a focus on weight management, and in select cases, surgical intervention to help protect vision.

Early diagnosis and coordinated care are key to preserving vision and improving symptoms.

ℍ𝕠𝕨 𝕥𝕠 𝕒𝕧𝕠𝕚𝕕 𝕣𝕖𝕓𝕠𝕦𝕟𝕕 𝕙𝕖𝕒𝕕𝕒𝕔𝕙𝕖𝕤 (𝕞𝕖𝕕𝕚𝕔𝕒𝕥𝕚𝕠𝕟 𝕠𝕧𝕖𝕣𝕦𝕤𝕖 𝕙𝕖𝕒𝕕𝕒𝕔𝕙𝕖𝕤)

Rebound headaches can happen when acute migraine medications are used too frequently — and it’s more common than many people realize.

𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐢𝐬 𝐚 𝐫𝐞𝐛𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐝 𝐡𝐞𝐚𝐝𝐚𝐜𝐡𝐞?
It’s a pattern where headache pain becomes more frequent or persistent due to regular use of acute medications. 𝑻𝒉𝒊𝒔 𝒊𝒔 𝒏𝒐𝒕 𝒂 𝒇𝒂𝒊𝒍𝒖𝒓𝒆 𝒐𝒏 𝒚𝒐𝒖𝒓 𝒑𝒂𝒓𝒕 — it’s a sign your migraine plan needs more support.

General guidance:

𝐎𝐓𝐂 𝐩𝐚𝐢𝐧 𝐫𝐞𝐥𝐢𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐬 𝐮𝐬𝐞𝐝 𝐦𝐨𝐫𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐧 𝟏𝟎 𝐝𝐚𝐲𝐬 𝐩𝐞𝐫 𝐦𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐡, 𝒄𝒂𝒏 𝒊𝒏𝒄𝒓𝒆𝒂𝒔𝒆 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒓𝒊𝒔𝒌 𝒐𝒇 𝒓𝒆𝒃𝒐𝒖𝒏𝒅 𝒉𝒆𝒂𝒅𝒂𝒄𝒉𝒆𝒔.

𝐓𝐫𝐢𝐩𝐭𝐚𝐧𝐬 𝐮𝐬𝐞𝐝 𝐦𝐨𝐫𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐧 𝟗 𝐝𝐚𝐲𝐬 𝐩𝐞𝐫 𝐦𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐡, 𝒄𝒂𝒏 𝒊𝒏𝒄𝒓𝒆𝒂𝒔𝒆 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒓𝒊𝒔𝒌 𝒐𝒇 𝒓𝒆𝒃𝒐𝒖𝒏𝒅 𝒉𝒆𝒂𝒅𝒂𝒄𝒉𝒆𝒔.

Ways to reduce your risk:

1️⃣ Build a comprehensive migraine toolkit
Relief shouldn’t rely on medications alone. A strong plan includes lifestyle support, rescue strategies, and non-medication tools when possible.

2️⃣ Talk with your provider about options without rebound risk
Preventive therapies like CGRP medications do not carry the same risk for medication overuse headache and may reduce the need for frequent rescue meds.

3️⃣ Make sure preventive care is optimized
This can include preventive medications, procedures, supplements, and lifestyle strategies tailored to your migraine pattern.

4️⃣ Support your nervous system long-term
Helping your brain become less sensitive to triggers over time often leads to fewer attacks — and less need for acute medication.

If you’re feeling stuck in a rebound cycle, there are ways forward. With the right plan, fewer headache days — and fewer meds — is possible. 💜

𝚆𝚑𝚢 𝚍𝚘 𝚖𝚒𝚐𝚛𝚊𝚒𝚗𝚎𝚜 𝚑𝚒𝚝 𝚠𝚑𝚎𝚗 𝚢𝚘𝚞 𝚏𝚒𝚗𝚊𝚕𝚕𝚢 𝚏𝚎𝚎𝚕 𝚛𝚎𝚕𝚊𝚡𝚎𝚍?

If you’ve ever pushed through a busy or stressful period only to get a migraine once things calm down — you’re not imagining it.

This is often called a 𝐥𝐞𝐭-𝐝𝐨𝐰𝐧 𝐦𝐢𝐠𝐫𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐞.

During stress, your body produces higher levels of 𝕒𝕕𝕣𝕖𝕟𝕒𝕝𝕚𝕟𝕖 𝕒𝕟𝕕 𝕔𝕠𝕣𝕥𝕚𝕤𝕠𝕝, which can temporarily keep migraine activity at bay. When the stress passes and those hormone levels drop, the nervous system becomes more vulnerable — and a migraine can be triggered.

In other words:
It’s not the relaxation that’s the problem. It’s the 𝒔𝒖𝒅𝒅𝒆𝒏 𝒔𝒉𝒊𝒇𝒕 in your nervous system.

This is a common, biologic migraine pattern — and it’s not your fault. Understanding why it happens is the first step toward reducing how often it shows up.
