It happens to all of us once in a while, you might hear someone say “oh it went down the wrong pipe”

But what does that actually mean?

It means instead of the food or liquids going down into your esophagus, it went into your lungs.

Coughing is your body’s way of protecting itself.

However, coughing when drinking coffee or water often
can be a sign of a swallowing disorder called dysphagia.

This is common after:
✔️ Stroke
✔️ Parkinson’s
✔️ Dementia

The good news?
Swallowing can be evaluated and treated by a speech therapist.

If you or someone you love struggles with drinks — don’t ignore it.

💙 Save this & share it with someone who needs it.

🌟Memory Monday: Pillboxes🌟

Using pillboxes is a great aid to use in helping to remember to take mediations. Set a reminder to fill them on Sunday and then leave them on the counter so they are right there for you!

Do you use a pillbox to help you to remember to take mediations?

Happy to share that I received an ACE award!! As a speech pathologist, we are required to complete 30 hours of continuing education over three years and I was able to complete 70 hours!

Therapy is not a one size fits all which is why I love to continue learning.

Sometimes I might use all the tools and therapy techniques I have and haven’t seen significant progress for a variety of reasons so continuing to learn is always key.

Over the last few years I was able to become certified in SPEAKOUT! for improving speech and swallowing for Parkinson’s Disease and for my dysphagia patients.

What continuing education courses are your favorite?!

Are you looking for speech therapy services? Wondering what you’ll need to answer during your first phone call?

Our first question is who are the therapy services specifically for? You might even be calling for a friend!

Insurance information is very important so we can check if we’re in network! We try our best to give an estimated cost but are not able to give an exact amount as things might change, such as deductibles being met, etc.

Our travel radius is about 20 minutes from Freehold, NJ.

The most important question is what exactly are you looking for services for? The scope of speech therapy is SO big so we want to make sure we are prepared for the evaluation. If you are seeking therapy for a difficulty we do not have much experience in, we are always happy to refer out to other specialty practices.

Lastly, we’d love to know where you heard about us so we can keep our relationships strong with our referral sources and make sure to send them a thank you!

Contact us for a free 15 minute consultation to learn more about our services!

Have you ever thought about how fast it actually takes a person to communicate? For most people, the answer is probably no because it comes so natural to us until communication is somehow impacted, such as after a stroke or brain injury.

People with aphasia are not able to communicate nearly as fast as 200-400 milliseconds. Patience and giving time plays a key role in communicating with individuals following a stroke or brain injury. As a society, we are constantly on the go so it’s natural for us to just want to finish someone else’s thoughts. Speech therapy plays a crucial role in helping rehabilitate speech and brain function but all communication partners play just as big of a role. Next time you meet someone who has suffered from a stroke or brain injury, remember silence and giving extra time is key.

Do you know the #1 cause of traumatic brain injuries?

Falls!

In 2019, the CDC found that falls accounted for 48% of TBI- related ER visits and 81% of TBI- related ER visits by individuals 65 years or older.

As it’s very icy and snowy this time of year, it’s important to know that falls can lead to TBIs with motor vehicle accidents being the second leading cause which can also occur due to icy conditions.

If you’ll be going outside, pay attention to where you’re walking and be cautious!

Look out for the elderly and try to have them stay inside as much as possible.

For today’s memory monday, we have an example of one of our memory strategies being used in a therapy session. This patient was having a very hard time remembering the name of the place he attends for PT but once I cued him to use visualization, the name came to him!

This morning’s therapy session used the Montessori approach to help an individual with dementia.

The Montessori approach to dementia helps to promote independence and engagement in meaningful activities. Individuals interests and hobbies can also be incorporated. If someone enjoyed sports, you can work on sorting different balls. What activities do you use?

🌟 Tuesday recap 🌟

Tuesday is usually my busiest day with one cancellation today. A big mixture of lots of different clients and disorders today!

🌟 Memory Monday: visualization 🌟

Picturing different places in your brain may help you remember something! Whether it’s picturing different rooms in your house to remember where you put something or picturing a building so you can remember the name of the place, try using visualization!

I’ll soon be sharing examples on how I put these memory strategies into practice.
