When your system feels overwhelmed, your breath can become an anchor.

Square breathing helps stabilize the nervous system, creating a sense of safety in the body—an essential foundation for trauma work like EMDR.

You don’t have to force calm.
Just follow the rhythm.

Inhale. Hold. Exhale. Hold.

Let your body remember what steady feels like.

Breathwork, Nervous System Regulation, & EMDR 🤍

Healing from trauma isn’t about “just talking about it”—it’s about helping the body feel safe again.

✨ Breathwork
Intentional breathing activates the parasympathetic nervous system, helping lower cortisol, reduce anxiety, and bring the body out of survival mode.

✨ Nervous System Regulation
When we build regulation skills, we increase our capacity to tolerate stress, reduce hyperarousal, and create a sense of internal safety and balance.

✨ EMDR
EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization & Reprocessing) helps the brain reprocess traumatic memories so they are no longer stored as “current threats.” Research shows it can significantly reduce symptoms of PTSD and emotional distress.

These approaches don’t just help you cope—
They help your nervous system heal.

💬 If you’ve been feeling stuck, overwhelmed, or on edge… your body might be asking for support, not more pushing.

Exercise isn’t just good for physical health—it’s powerful for nervous system regulation and trauma recovery.

When we move our bodies, we help discharge stress and activate systems in the brain that support regulation and resilience. Movement can reduce cortisol, increase endorphins, and improve the brain’s ability to process emotions.

This is why exercise can be a helpful complement to EMDR therapy and other trauma-focused treatments. When the nervous system feels more regulated, the brain is better able to process and integrate difficult memories.

You don’t need intense workouts to benefit.
Gentle, consistent movement can support healing.

Think:
• Walking
• Yoga or stretching
• Strength training
• Dancing
• Time outdoors

Small steps can make a meaningful difference for your nervous system.

The Window of Tolerance describes the zone where your nervous system feels regulated enough to stay present and process emotions.

When we are within our window, we can think clearly, feel emotions, and stay grounded.

Trauma can narrow this window, making it easier to shift into:
🔺 Hyperarousal – anxiety, panic, overwhelm
🔻 Hypoarousal – numbness, shutdown, disconnection

One goal of EMDR therapy is helping expand this window so the nervous system can process difficult experiences without becoming overwhelmed.

Healing happens as your capacity to stay present grows.

I had the pleasure of taking a restorative yoga class tonight and was reminded that healing happens in stillness too. Giving the body space to rest and recover feels like true self-care.

Doing the hard thing isn’t about proving your strength — it’s about building it.
Growth doesn’t happen in comfort. It happens when you lean into the challenge, face the discomfort, and do the thing that scares you just a little.
Keep showing up. That’s where the growth is. 🌱
