55 MPH Speed Limit Day in 2026 falls on Friday, January 2nd, an annual observance remembering the first national speed limit set in 1974 to conserve fuel during the oil crisis, a limit that was lifted by states in 1995.

The official law, known as the Emergency Highway Energy Conservation Act, was signed on January 2nd, 1974, but did not kick in for about 60 days. Many people ask if the 55 mph speed limit really made a difference. The government did see some improvements:
• Fuel Savings: Cars do tend to get better gas mileage at lower speeds. The plan was to save around 2.2% on fuel. It turned out the real number might have been closer to 1%, which was still something, but not a huge amount.
• Fewer Crashes and Deaths: One surprise was that road fatalities went down after the limit was put in place. Driving slower gives people more reaction time and makes accidents less severe.

This drop in deaths became a major reason people said the 55 mph limit should stay, even after the oil crisis was less of a problem.

Rosa found immense joy in preparing and sharing meals for family, friends and even strangers and strove to help others by any means necessary. Her holiday pies were family favorites and her pasta “fazool” was legendary. She had a bold sense of humor, an infectious laugh and always kept it real. While Rosa possessed many wonderful qualities, perhaps yet her most redeeming quality was one of selflessness. She was strong and often described as a “bull of a woman” by her own self-sacrifice and fierce loyalty which was manifested as a mother’s love to all who had the privilege of knowing her.

“The Festival of Enormous Changes at the Last Minute" is observed on December 30. People usually panic when they realize that there are only two days left of the year until the next year rolls out. You may think you're out of time, but you still have two days to complete and fulfill your goals for the year!

This day reminds us that changes can still be made and new year’s resolutions can still be resolved. Two days may not be lengthy but it is enough time to finish whatever you started with. You can always start that diet or workout routine. Take the time to plan for next year and undertake and commit to those plans this time around."

What is Kwanzaa? It's a non religious holiday that takes place from the 26th of December to Jan 1. It is meant to be a celebration of African Americans, and is based on several harvest festivals. Who should celebrate this? Dr. Maulana Karenga says anyone who wants to appreciate African culture should celebrate Kwanzaa, no matter their background. It was created for African Americans and has been adopted by many Africans, so clearly some appreciate the tradition.

David selflessly served his country in the United States Air Force as a First-Class Airman in aerospace and warning systems operations, a role he carried with quiet pride and a strong sense of duty. His career as an electrical technician/engineer included several local businesses, and his last place of employment was the Greater New Haven Transit Co. as a part-time dispatcher. During his children’s early years, David was active in his sons’ activities as a Boy Scout leader and coach for Little League Baseball and youth soccer.

A resilient and headstrong man, David battled diabetes for more than 25 years, meeting it with grit and determination. He was known for his tenacity and his humor—always ready with a joke, whether it was corny, slightly inappropriate, or perfectly timed. While he worked hard to hide it, those closest to him knew the truth: beneath the tough exterior was a soft heart and an enormous capacity for love. He showed that love through steadfast loyalty, unwavering support, and simply showing up—again and again.

David will be deeply missed, fondly remembered, and lovingly joked about—exactly the way he would have wanted.
