Founded in 1900, the New York State Department of Health's Helen Hayes Hospital is a speciality physical rehabilitation hospital. We help individuals recover from catastrophic injuries and disabling illnesses, including spinal cord and brain injury, stroke, cardiac, neurological and orthopedic disorders.

On this date in 1900, our hospital opened its doors to its first patients, welcoming four children in need of physical rehabilitation. From our beginnings in a small cottage, to the state-of-the-art, comprehensive rehab hospital we call home today, it has been our absolute privilege to serve our patients and community for more than 125 years.

We are so proud of our enduring legacy of excellence, innovation and hope—and we remain committed to empowering patients to regain their mobility and independence for generations to come.
