Pilates BY Dana Why I Love Pilates and Reasons Why You Should Start Too! Well, I can say confidently that I love Pilates and that I wouldn’t give it up for anything.

About 12 years ago, I decided to try Pilates I had heard it was great for core strength, posture, and toning so figured it was worth checking out. Not only have I notice physical results, but I have also found it great for the mind. There are a lot of reasons why you should try Pilates:

1. Quick results. In as short as a couple weeks you will notice a difference in your strength, your body awareness, and your posture.

2. Great workout. It may be easy to learn, but you do work hard in Pilates. You have to constantly focus on each individual movement and staying stable. At the end of a session, you will feel like you have done something and can go home knowing that you challenged your body.

3. Relaxing and invigorating. Pilates allows you to calm down and release your mind. It also energizes you by increasing blood flow to various parts of your body. The stretch feels amazing too.

4. Easy to learn. Pilates is a series of moves and you learn them in stages. One move builds on to the next so you always remember what you have learned previously. You can move at the pace that is best for you.

5. Increased flexibility. Pilates increases your range or motion and your strength so you are better equipped for the other parts of your life. It also prevents injuries because it ensures each muscle group is worked evenly.

6. Improved posture. Pilates teaches you to “strengthen while you lengthen.” It gets your core tighter and increases the support you give your back. You end up being able to carry yourself more upright and your posture improves.

7. Safe for pregnancy. For my female readers, Pilates is great to do while you’re pregnant. It strengthens important baby birthing muscles and keeps your circulation in good flow.

8. Better breathing. Pilates focuses on your breath and reminds you to realize how you breathe. The better breath you get the more efficient your body becomes. As you can see, I am a fan of Pilates. I have found Pilates to be great to my health journey. So give Pilates a try and feel the same benefits I feel. Let me know how it goes and feel free to send in any of your questions along the way.

Pilates Exercise of the Week: Arms Back with Magic Circle
This Pilates magic circle exercise is a major upper back strengthener that adds an element of upper arm work as well -- think triceps as in under arm flab. It opens the shoulders and chest making it an excellent antidote to computer hunch (sit up, open your chest and release your shoulders right now!).

Pilates Exercise of the Week: Swan

Pilates swan exercise is a graceful back extension exercise. It is wonderful for strengthening the back as you learn to lengthen and extend the line of movement through the neck.

Swan is also a chest and hip opener, and a stretch for the front body that nevertheless makes you keep your integration in the front. You don't get to forget your legs or hips either.

Swan will go with you throughout your Pilates journey. We do it on the mat where there are several variations. We also do swan exercises on the large Pilates equipment like the reformer, chair, barrel, and pole system. So it behooves you to build your swan consciously and conscientiously.
