I’ve struggled to speak up on my public professional platforms about the ongoing and escalating g*noc1de in Gaza and now the expansion to Lebanon. I feared backlash, misunderstanding, or saying the wrong thing. But my fear is nothing compared to the terror the people in Gaza and across the region live with every day.

Children, families, and entire communities are being devastated, and staying silent out of fear is no longer an option for me. These images and stories over the past year have changed me. I hope others in the psychoanalytic and broader mental health community who haven’t been vocal will join me in speaking up. The emotional health of the world needs us.

What’s happening in Gaza is more than a humanitarian crisis—it’s a litmus test for the future of justice, human rights, and accountability. The world’s response to this moment will reveal whether we are willing to stand for the dignity and humanity of *all* people, or if fear, division, and apathy will shape the future. We need an arms embargo NOW!

If the suffering of an entire population can be ignored, what kind of precedent does that set? If we choose silence now, what happens the next time injustice surfaces—whether in Gaza or anywhere else?

Our actions today shape the world we’ll live in tomorrow. I choose to speak, to stand, and to fight for a world where human life matters more than borders or politics.

With allll of the discussion of these days ( debacle), Scherlis gives a needed and refreshing take on the therapy term de jour, its history, and what this beautiful analytic critique brings to the loud and crowded table.

We did it! ( voice) Meet three new Los Ángeles Psychoanalysts!
For me this process was 6 years, 3 training cases, over 2000 hours of clinical work, and over 350 hours of supervision. But those are just logistics. Hard to put into words how I have grown and the amount of gratitude I have for my colleagues, mentors and teachers. Here’s to what’s next! 🥂

🎤Who else has watched The Idol? I’ve been captivated, revolted, and confused. You? . I’d like to think this is by design.

✏️ As I read reviews, I’ve been curious about the assertion that Jocelyn’s attraction to Tedros makes no sense, isn’t believable, that is just a bad actor— and this is just a played out story. What none of the reviews take into account is the psychoanalytic concept . (Among other things. But, let’s start at this.)

🤔 From the outside, it makes no sense as to why she is so drawn to him— he seems obvious, creepy but also very attentive to her and seductive- which we as the audience feel confused by. Jocelyn’s attraction to Tedros feels more like a fantasy of what she believes him to be (or what might be unknowingly familiar) more than what he actually is— for better or worse. What is reality and what is fantasy isn’t clear in this story.

🧨 I’m not going to make any generic interpretations about what this “could” mean about their internal worlds, or how it connects to Jocelyn’s history. Rather, I’m interested to see how this plays out as the story goes. What are your thoughts?

Perhaps an unpopular concept. But, I stand behind it. Thank you for myth busting .psychoanalysis! 👊🏼

Healthy dependence leads to independence. And this doesn’t just mean that has to occur within a therapy relationship. But, if you haven’t had an experience of feeling “need” was something other than a (potentially negative) four letter word, you might benefit from depth oriented analytic therapy. It’s not as scary as it sounds. Promise 😉

I pride myself on being able to help people find a good fit for therapy based on a variety of factors.

A colleague on put it this way, “I can’t tell you how I’m feeling but I can sure make you feel it.”

In these moments, it can be difficult to think clearly when you feel your mind is under fire. Your feeling might pull you to act on something as though you have taken on the other person’s anxiety.

Trying to hold onto your mind can be difficult! Slowing down the process between you and the other is helpful in regulating your own anxiety which in turn will help the other.

“A vulnerable narcissist feels he or she must protect themselves from negative scrutiny. And to them, any scrutiny feels negative. They struggle with taking in compliments, mistrusting the source and perverting such feedback into veiled attacks.”
