Tissue Expanders have a magnetic port that can be accessed through the skin to fill the device with sterile saline (water) in an office setting.

Tissue expansion is usually begun in the operating room and continued in the office once the initial incisions are healed. Expansion usually occurs 1-2x a week per patient preference until target volume is reached.

Most women do not experience significant discomfort during tissue expansion though some may note some soreness or tightness, requiring a mild pain medication like Ibuprofen or Tylenol.

Target volume is determined by several factors including expander capacity, patients anatomy, and a patient’s individual aesthetic goals for her reconstructed breast.

Once the skin is sufficiently stretched, a second operation is performed to exchange the tissue expander for a permanent implant.

Tissue expanders are a temporary implant device that are used to stretch the skin. While tissue expanders have a variety of uses, today let’s focus on tissue expansion after mastectomy.

At the time of mastectomy, a tissue expanders is placed in the breast to maintain and continued to create a pocket for eventual placement of a breast implant or even leading up to some forms of staged natural tissue breast reconstruction.

Tissue expanders are filled with saline (water), usually on a weekly basis, until adequate expansion is achieved.

The goal of Breast Cancer Awareness Month is to promote screening, prevention, and awareness to breast cancer and the breast cancer community. It is also a time to shine a light on Breast Reconstruction and what a patient’s options are after undergoing breast cancer treatment.

Here is a brief overview of reconstructive approaches after mastectomy.

At Harris Plastic Surgery, we take pride in being advocates for breast cancer and breast reconstruction.
We offer advanced care in reconstructive breast plastic surgery, focusing on breast reconstruction after mastectomy, correction of post lumpectomy breast deformities, and secondary correction of the unfavorable or failed result after breast reconstruction.

We’re back for a !! This patient presented to our office after MOHs surgery for removal of a basal cell cancer from his upper lip. He presented with a 1.5 cm x 2 cm defect (seen on second slide). We were able to rearrange the nearby tissues using a rotation advancement flap to close the defect. 4 months later, it’s hard to tell he ever had a procedure done! 👏🏼
