We’ve all been through so much with Winter Storm Fern, and I’m deeply saddened by the recent news of rising su***de attempts in our community. I know that when our survival is tested, it’s easy for the weight of the world to feel unbearable.

Because of this, I’m opening up extra time in my schedule next week for anyone who needs a safe space to talk. We are in this together, and I am here to help us navigate the aftermath of this storm

Virginia Satir, one of the founders of family therapy, believed that congruent communication—being honest, open, and aligned in what we feel, think, and say—is the foundation for healthy relationships. Congruence means that our words, body language, and emotions match. It’s when we’re real, respectful, and present with ourselves and others.

But when we don’t feel safe—emotionally, physically, or relationally—we often slip into survival stances to protect ourselves.

These patterns develop early and once kept us safe—but as adults, they often block authentic connection. When we operate from survival, we communicate from fear instead of truth. Congruence invites us to slow down, notice what’s happening inside us, and express it with clarity and compassion.

Healing happens when we replace our survival stances with self-awareness, honesty, and empathy. Communication isn’t just about words—it’s about safety, alignment, and connection.
