🚨🚨🚨🚨Parents of wanderers/elopers: if you're struggling to keep your child safe at school, speak to your child's doctor about this diagnostic code. The code can help establish the medical necessity for close, constant adult supervision throughout the school day. It can also support the implementation of essential safety measures, such as fencing, door alarms, visual cues, and a coordinated school-wide response plan.

Z91.83 - Wandering (Elopement) diagnostic code.

Parents of wanderers/elopers: if you're struggling to keep your child safe at school, speak to your child's doctor about this diagnostic code. NAA also provides a sample physician letter in our main safety toolkit (linked in comments.)

Movement Is Regulation, Not Misbehavior

💡 Autistic individuals often use movement — fidgeting, pacing, rocking, or bouncing — to self-regulate, focus, or reduce overwhelm. Instead of stopping the movement, ask: “What need is this meeting?”

Reframe the behavior:
✔️ Rocking = grounding
✔️ Pacing = processing
✔️ Fidgeting = focus aid
✔️ Stimming = communication

Educators & Providers: Build movement-friendly environments.
👪 Families: Embrace stimming at home without shame.
🧠 Autistic Individuals: You don’t need to “mask” to be accepted.

Normalize movement. Respect sensory needs. Support self-regulation.
