Today is International Alagille Syndrome Awareness Day!

There are over 100 types of liver disease, Alagille Syndrome is one of them.

Alagille Syndrome is an inherited disorder found in infants and young children. It is inherited from one parent and there is a 50% chance of the unborn child developing the disease. Symptoms include jaundice, pale, loose stools and poor growth within the first three months of life. There is no cure and treatments focus on increasing the flow of bile through the liver, maintaining normal growth and development, and correcting nutritional deficiencies that often develop.

Last week, leading medical experts, patient advocates, and congressional leadership came together for an American Liver Foundation briefing on liver cancer, focusing on prevalence, risk factors, prevention, and treatment strategies, and the urgent need for policy solutions that improve access to care.

“Liver cancer remains a leading cause of cancer mortality, with 40,000 Americans diagnosed each year,” said Lorraine Stiehl, CEO of the American Liver Foundation. “Our congressional briefing highlighted evidence-based strategies for prevention and treatment, along with legislative solutions that can help reduce financial barriers and improve outcomes for patients.”
From survivor voices to clinical expertise and congressional leadership, the briefing underscored why advocacy on Capitol Hill matters for the millions affected by liver disease.
