This Women’s History Month, we’re proud to highlight women leading the way in liver health.

Today we feature Tamar H. Taddei, MD, FAASLD, Chief of Digestive Diseases at VA Connecticut Health Care System and Professor at Yale School of Medicine.

Inspired by witnessing her institution’s first liver transplant as a medical student, Dr. Taddei has dedicated her career to caring for Veterans facing a high burden of liver disease. She also honors her mother’s memory each day through her commitment to exceptional patient care.

Her involvement with American Liver Foundation, from early Liver Walk participation to ongoing engagement, reflects her belief in the power of community to educate, advocate, and ease suffering.

Fun fact: Her undergraduate degree was in diplomacy — skills she still uses daily.

Thank you, Dr. Taddei, for your leadership and unwavering dedication.

The Center for Information and Study on Clinical Research Participation (CISCRP), together with a pharmaceutical company, is planning a virtual focus group with adults diagnosed with metastatic hepatocellular carcinoma (mHCC) and/or their care partners to discuss their experiences, share general thoughts on clinical research, and provide feedback on a proposed clinical study evaluating a new treatment for mHCC.

The goal of the focus group is not to recruit for a clinical trial, but rather to learn from patients and care partners how to best create a clinical trial that addresses the unique needs of individuals with this condition.
The virtual focus group would take place in March 2026, with the exact date and time to be determined based on participant availability. The focus group will be conducted virtually using an online platform (Zoom) as a single 2-hour meeting.

As a thank you for your time, CISCRP will provide an honorarium for those who are eligible and participate.

If you are interested in participating in this opportunity or have any additional questions, please visit: https://alf.social/CISCRPmHCC to fill out your form and we’ll get back to you shortly.

Here’s a Feel Good Friday story that highlights just how incredible the liver and the people who donate truly are.

When 100-year-old World War II veteran Dale Steele of Nebraska passed away earlier this year, his life of service didn’t end. His liver was donated and successfully transplanted the very next day, making him the oldest organ donor in U.S. history.

It’s a powerful reminder that there isn’t a simple age limit for organ donation every donor is evaluated individually. And it’s also proof of something we know well: the liver is an amazing organ capable of giving someone a second chance at life.

Big news for living organ donors!

The Senate HELP Committee has passed the Living Donor Protection Act (S.1552) out of committee — an important step toward protecting the people who give the gift of life.

As our CEO, Lorraine Stiehl, shared, this bill is essential to protecting living donors and offering hope to patients and families waiting for a lifesaving transplant.

Now we need Congress to finish the job.

Urge your lawmakers to vote YES on S.1552 and protect living donors and the patients who depend on them.

March is Women’s History Month, and all month we’re celebrating women making a difference in liver health. 💚💙

Today we’re featuring Renu Dhanasekaran, MD, PhD, Assistant Professor at Stanford University.

Drawn to complex clinical challenges, Dr. Dhanasekaran chose hepatology for its multidisciplinary care and transformative therapies — from antivirals to liver transplantation. Seeing patients with advanced liver tumors return years later, cancer-free, continues to fuel her clinical and research work.

Through her involvement with American Liver Foundation as both a peer reviewer and research grant recipient, she has helped advance rigorous, patient-centered liver disease research nationwide.

Fun fact: She speaks six languages and was once a national finalist in medical Jeopardy!

Thank you, Dr. Dhanasekaran, for strengthening the liver community through care, research, and collaboration.
