Paris Carter (Marshall Co. High School) and Sydney Kerley (McCracken Co. High School) were selected to represent JPEC in DC for 2022! Mondays events included: Following Cooperative Youth Day activities with other state delegations, Kentucky’s Washington Youth Tour delegates visited the World War II Memorial (above), the Smithsonian Natural History Museum, Holocaust Museum and Jefferson Memorial.

Each year, Jackson Purchase Energy Cooperative selects four high school juniors to represent the co-op and learn about leadership, cooperatives, and politics. The students spend a day at the state capitol in Frankfort, KY learning how Kentucky government works and meeting with legislators.

Two students from the Frankfort, KY Youth Tour are then chosen to join students from around the country and enjoy a free trip to Washington, DC.

Super proud of our girl!

Nearly 100 Kentucky high school juniors representing 17 electric cooperatives mingled with elected leaders and walked the halls of Kentucky government on Wednesday as the Frankfort Youth Tour tradition resumed after a two-year COVID absence.

The youth tour coincided with the launch of the 2022 Co-ops Vote initiative with Kentucky Secretary of State Michael Adams (see below). Youth Tour students also heard remarks from Attorney General Daniel Cameron, Representative Samara Heavrin (a Youth Tour alumna), and Senator Matt Castlen.

This year marks the fiftieth anniversary of the first Kentucky Rural Electric Youth Tour. Since 1972, the statewide association of Kentucky's electric cooperatives has coordinated the youth tour to both Frankfort and Washington, D.C. Co-ops select rising young leaders in their service territories to gain a personal understanding of American history, civic affairs, and their role as citizens and members of electric cooperatives.

Students Palmer Sims (St. Mary HS), Paris Carter (Marshall Co. HS) and Sydney Kerley (McCracken Co HS) represented Jackson Purchase Energy for the day in Frankfort.
