Today, on Autism Awareness Day, we’re highlighting the intersection of autism and eating disorders.

Autistic individuals face a higher risk of developing eating disorders, yet this connection is frequently misunderstood or missed entirely. These experiences deserve more awareness, nuance, and compassionate care.

Understanding this overlap is an important step toward better support for individuals, families, and providers alike. 🤍

In honor of Stress Awareness Month, we’re recognizing the ways stress can show up—especially for those in eating disorder recovery.

Stress can impact thoughts, behaviors, and patterns around food in ways that can feel overwhelming or hard to navigate. Understanding these shifts can be a meaningful step toward supporting yourself with care and compassion.

🌈💙 We are thrilled to be partnering with , , and in honor of International Transgender Day of Visibility — a day to honor the resilience, contributions, and lives of transgender and gender-diverse people, while recognizing the barriers they continue to face.

Visibility matters. Everyone deserves care that respects names, pronouns, cultures, and identities—and that acknowledges how dysphoria, stigma, and body surveillance can influence the development of eating disorders and disordered eating. 💜

Transgender and gender-diverse people deserve to be seen, supported, and affirmed in every space—including in eating disorder care and recovery.

March is Self-Harm Awareness Month, and it’s important to acknowledge the connection that can exist between eating disorders and self-harm.

For some individuals, self-harm may be used as a way to cope with overwhelming emotions, self-criticism, shame, or distress—many of the same feelings that can accompany an eating disorder. Both are serious mental health struggles that deserve compassion, understanding, and support. 💙

Recovery is possible, and no one has to navigate this alone. If you or someone you love is struggling, support is available.

STAFF SPOTLIGHT: Meet Rachel Rifkin 💛

Rachel’s journey with The Alliance has truly come full circle. Years ago, she found help through The Alliance’s services during her own recovery. Today, she leads one of the very programs that once supported her.

As our Director of Support Group Services, Rachel works every day to ensure our groups are safe, intentional, and supportive space—training facilitators, listening to community needs, and creating spaces where people feel seen, heard, and understood.

Rachel’s story is a powerful reminder of what community and support can make possible. We’re so grateful for the care, insight, and leadership Rachel brings to this work every day.

Body neutrality can be a gentle, sustainable approach in eating disorder recovery. It focuses on what your body does, meeting its needs without judgment, and reducing appearance-based self-worth.

Practicing body neutrality can help lower body checking, reduce shame, and create space to focus on nourishment, rest, and mental health. Steps include using neutral language about your body, unfollowing certain social media accounts, and focusing on values or experiences.

You do not have to "love" your body to take care of it.🤍

Sleep and rest are essential in eating disorder recovery. They support physical healing, emotional balance, and coping with urges. 🤍

Gentle rest — including breaks, pacing yourself, and letting go of perfection — is part of recovery.

The Alliance

The Alliance for Eating Disorders Awareness is a national non-profit organization dedicated to providing programs and activities aimed at outreach, education, early intervention, and advocacy for all eating disorders.

Founded in October 2000, The Alliance has worked tirelessly to raise awareness; eliminate secrecy and stigma; promote access to care; and support those susceptible to, currently struggling with, and recovered from eating disorders. We create a bridge for those needing and seeking help by connecting people with resources to assist them in recovery.

The Alliance offers comprehensive services, including: educational presentations to schools, healthcare providers, hospitals, treatment centers, and community agencies; free, clinician-led weekly support groups for those struggling and for their loved ones; support and referrals through both our free help-line and comprehensive referral website, www.findEDhelp.com; and advocacy for eating disorders and mental health legislation. In August 2017, The Alliance opened Psychological Services, which offers direct, low-cost, life-saving treatment to underinsured and uninsured adults in our community.

Since its inception, The Alliance has offered presentations on eating disorders, positive body image, and self-esteem to more than 300,000 individuals nationwide. Over the past 18 years, we have demonstrated our tireless commitment to making a positive impact on our community.
