Spinal Cord Stimulation (SCS) is achieved by placing leads within the epidural space next to the part of the spinal cord responsible for feeling pain. SCS can effectively decrease chronic intractable pain of the trunk, low back, and limbs due to failed back surgery, complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS), peripheral neuropathy, and chronic pain syndrome. It can be so effective at helping patients become pain free that oral pain medication can be eliminated! It is one of the many rewarding procedures I perform in my office that help patients get back to doing the activities they love.

Epidural steroid injections alleviate back and leg pain, commonly referred to as sciatica, due to nerve compression within the spine. Although there are many causes , nerve compression usually results from disc herniations, spinal stenosis, and spine degenerative changes. These injections can be performed in the cervical, thoracic, lumbar, and sacral spine and can be performed every 3 months if necessary. The goal is to decrease pain and increase function so patients can get back to doing what they enjoy.

To perform a safe and accurate injection, we use fluoroscopy, or live x-ray, during the procedure. In the pictures above, the first two images show ideal needle placement before x-ray dye is injected and the final picture is after x-ray dye is injected. The x-ray dye is tracking along the nerve into the spinal canal which is exactly what we want! We then inject a steroid which will provide the pain relief, usually within few days of the injection.

A vertebral kyphoplasty is a procedure that treats pain due to compression fractures in the spine by injecting bone cement to stabilize the fracture. Vertebral compression fractures typically results from osteoporosis or from trauma such as a fall. It is an extremely rewarding procedure because often patients walk out of the procedure room pain free!
