Providers required to offer chaperones for any medical procedure

An updated Defense Health Agency policy requires medical providers to notify beneficiaries of their right to request a chaperone during any medical or dental examination.

Chaperones are trained staff members available to support you and ensure a safe, respectful, and professional environment. A chaperone must be offered any time an exam involves sensitive or intimate procedures, but you can request one at any point – before or during an appointment – no explanation needed.

The chaperone must be at least 18 years old, knowledgeable about the chaperone process and any applicable procedures, and able to maintain confidentiality and respectful professional behavior.

This policy is a core part of DHA and Keller’s commitment to a culture of safety and patient-centered care, rooted in respect for all our TRICARE beneficiaries. Your rights, your privacy, and your dignity matter. We are committed to transparency and accountability, and we are always listening to improve your patient experience.

For more information or if you have questions about the chaperone policy, go to https://dha.mil/chaperone; or https://keller.tricare.mil/Patient-Resources/Chaperone-Policy; or contact Keller’s Patient Advocate at 315-774-8473 or e-mail at dha.ncr.Keller-ACH.mbx.keller-patient-advocate@health.mil.

Keller Army Community Hospital will be implementing ‘ambient listening’ technology to strengthen the patient-provider care experience by helping our providers focus more on YOU – the beneficiary – and less on their computer screens.

Ambient listening is a secure voice recognition technology that helps providers create clinical notes. The technology works in the background during medical appointments. It captures the conversation between you and your provider and converts it to text. Then it organizes important medical details into clinical notes. Your provider reviews these notes and adds them to your health record. You can find the notes in the MHS GENESIS Patient Portal.

Beneficiaries must provide ‘verbal consent’ before providers can use ambient listening during medical appointments.

By taking care of the note taking – in the background – ambient listening allows providers to better engage with the beneficiary and spend less time using their computer, resulting in more personalized care and better outcomes. All audio and generated documentation are protected using secure, cyber compliant controls to ensure the confidentiality of a patient’s health information.

More information on ‘ambient listening’ can be found at https://tricare.mil/MHSGENESISRecords.

Under the Defense Health Agency and through continued advances in technology, Keller Army Community Hospital continues to improve and evolve to better serve the Greater West Point community and our beneficiaries.
