Creating spaces where young people feel informed, supported, and confident matters. Presented in collaboration with Junior League of Reading and Berks Teens, Let’s Talk Period brings together healthcare professionals and families for an honest, age-appropriate conversation about puberty and periods.

Designed for students in grades 3 through 8 and a trusted adult, this free event focuses on education and practical guidance to support healthy development.

Join us Saturday, February 21, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Reading Hospital School of Health Sciences. We will also be collecting new and gently used bras of all sizes and styles to distribute to local agencies supporting individuals in need.

Presence is a powerful form of care, and everyone deserves comfort, dignity, and companionship at the end of life. 💙

Reading Hospital is welcoming compassionate community members to volunteer for our No One Dies Alone (NODA) program. Trained volunteers are matched with hospice patients nearing the end of life to offer quiet support, whether that means sitting at the bedside, reading softly, or simply holding a hand.

Volunteers receive comprehensive training and provide reassurance, dignity, and human connection during life’s most tender moments. It is a profound way to support patients when it matters most.

If you feel called to offer your time and heart, we would be honored to hear from you. Interested community members can contact Tina Figueroa, manager of Volunteer Services and Spiritual Care, at Tina.Figueroa@towerhealth.org or 484-628-8217.

If you have ever called Tower Health Medical Group Pediatrics in Wyomissing with a worried heart, there is a good chance you have heard Nurse Barbara’s voice on the other line. 📞

For many years, her calm, steady presence has guided parents and families through fevers, medication questions, and the kinds of worries that can feel overwhelming, offering comfort when it was needed most.

When Barbara Kantner graduated from the Reading Hospital School of Nursing in 1971, she knew exactly who she wanted to be: a nurse. Inspired by her grandfather, a family doctor in a small town, she built her life and career right here in Reading. She floated across units and worked in what was once called the accident dispensary, learning on carbon paper and growing alongside emergency nursing as it evolved from a handful of beds into a full emergency department. She later spent 13 years as a school nurse so she could be closer to her son while still caring for others. Through every change, she said, one thing stayed the same: you are always learning, no matter your role.

In January of 1997, Barbara returned to Reading Hospital, this time in pediatrics. It was a move she never expected, but one that would define the next 29 years. For the past 15 of those years, her work shifted to the phones, and for countless parents and caregivers, her voice became familiar. She helped them navigate sick babies, medical concerns, and moments of uncertainty or fear. “I like to think of myself as a substitute mom,” she said. “Sometimes, all we need is a bit of reassurance.”

Barbara has always believed in meeting families where they are. She gently reminds parents, and even fellow employees, that in those moments, it is okay to simply be a parent. Her purpose has remained the same: ease fears, build confidence, and ensure every family feels heard.

Over the years, healthcare has changed in many ways. The heart of nursing has not. As Barbara retires on January 30, the same date she was hired, she leaves behind more than decades of service. As a three-time DAISY Award recipient, she leaves a legacy of compassion, steady guidance, and families who felt supported because someone took the time to listen. 💙

We’d like to take a moment to sincerely thank our healthcare staff who showed up to care for our patients during the winter snowstorm. 🩵❄️

Through snow, sleet, and ice, hospitals never close. Because of our staff, care continued. From clinical teams to support services, every role played a part in creating a safe, healing environment during challenging conditions.

We are also grateful to the first responders and essential workers across our community who worked tirelessly through the storm to keep everyone safe and connected.

To all who showed up when it mattered most, thank you for your dedication, compassion, and service.

Check out a few photos from our snowy weekend. 📸

Let’s talk layers. Even though the snow has moved on, we’re dealing with some very cold temperatures this week. That kind of cold can become dangerous if you’re not dressed for it. Here’s an easy way to think about cold weather layers:

🧦 Base Layer
This is what sits right next to your skin. Choose snug, moisture-wicking clothes like thermal tops, long underwear, or leggings. This layer helps keep sweat off your skin so you stay dry and warm.

🧥 Insulation Layer
This is your warmth layer. Think fleece, wool sweaters, thick sweatpants, or flannel-lined pants. These pieces trap heat close to your body and help keep your core warm.

🌬️ Outer Shell
This layer protects you from wind and cold air. A windproof or water-resistant coat and pants help block the chill.

A few extra health reminders during extreme cold:
• Cover exposed skin when you go outside, even for short trips.
• Drink water and eat regular meals to help your body generate heat.
• Take breaks if you are outdoors and head inside if you start to feel numb or overly cold.
• If you notice numbness, intense shivering, confusion, or drowsiness, get warm right away and seek medical help.

Cold weather can sneak up on you. Dressing in layers helps protect your health and keeps you comfortable while temperatures stay low. ❄️

During this year’s MLK Day of Service, Reading Hospital team members came together to support our Street Medicine program by assembling food and toiletry kits for unsheltered members of our community.

This initiative began in 2023 and continues to grow. This year, more than 200 bags were assembled 🎒, providing nearly a year’s worth of supplies for the Street Medicine program to share with those in need. 🧼🥫

Thank you to every volunteer who gave their time and heart to make this meaningful day of service possible. 💙
