The life-threatening red meat allergy you need to know about.

Did you know that a single bite from a Lone Star tick can lead to Alpha-gal syndrome? This is a serious condition in humans that causes a life-threatening allergy to red meat and dairy. While our pets don’t get the allergy themselves, they are the primary way these ticks get close to our families.

Adams County Veterinary Service recommends Credelio Quattro for your pets. It’s a powerhouse preventative that kills Lone Star ticks TWO TIMES faster than the competition. ⚡️ We want the best for your furry family members, and keeping these pests away is a top priority for everyone's safety.

Springtime ACL injuries often start with a subtle limp or a slight hesitation when jumping. As the weather warms up, we see a major surge in knee injuries. After a cozy winter, dogs are ready to sprint, but their muscles and ligaments might not be prepared for the sudden burst of energy!

It's important to know that ACL tears generally occur with meniscal tears. This combination leads to significantly greater pain and lameness for your pet, making early detection and treatment crucial.

To avoid the Springtime ACL surge, we recommend easing into outdoor activities. Start with shorter walks and gradual play sessions to build back strength before the heavy-duty fetching begins. High-energy play on soft or uneven spring ground can put a lot of stress on those joints.

If you notice any limping on a rear leg or stiffness, Adams County Veterinary Service offers expert orthopedic care. With over 35 years of experience in complex orthopedic surgeries, Dr. Dan and our devoted team are here to help your pet recover and thrive. We treat every patient like our own pet with loving attention and care.

Hookworms at any age can be easier to miss than you think. One big myth is that you’ll see worms in the p**p: but these parasites are microscopic! Plus, hookworm eggs are incredibly hardy and can survive in your soil for years.

Adams County Veterinary Service offers expert care to help you spot the red flags owners often miss:
- Soft stool
- Weight loss
- Low-grade anemia
- Muscle wasting down the back
- General "ill thrift"

Keeping your dogs and cats parasite-free protects your family, especially young children, from becoming hosts for aberrant parasites. This is a crucial step in keeping the whole household safe.

Year-round prevention is key! While it’s called "heartworm prevention," these treatments handle many parasites more effectively than what you’ll find at big-box stores like Tractor Supply or Walmart. Adams County Veterinary Service is your best source for knowledge. Feel free to bring in a stool sample with every exam or just for a check.

Secret signs of airway distress in flat-faced breeds are often misunderstood. For Bulldogs and other brachycephalic pets, that "noisy" breathing might actually be an elongated soft palate. This can make simple tasks like walking or playing incredibly difficult and even dangerous in the heat.

Adams County Veterinary Service offers specialized soft palate resection surgery to help these sweet pets breathe easier and live a much higher quality of life. Dr. Dan Meakin is a general practitioner who brings over 35 years of surgical experience to these complex airway procedures: offering specialty-level care at general practice prices right here in West Union.

If your bulldog or pug is struggling to catch their breath or snoring loudly while awake, it’s time for an airway examination. We treat every patient like our own pet with loving attention and care.

Call us at 937-544-2323 or email us now at acvetservices@gmail.com to schedule an airway examination. Let’s help your best friend breathe easy again!

Secret signs of tapeworms your cat is hiding! 🐱🪱

Ever notice what looks like tiny, wiggling grains of rice near your cat's tail or in their favorite nap spot? Those aren't crumbs: they’re actually tapeworm segments.

Here is the gross truth: cats get tapeworms by grooming themselves and accidentally swallowing a flea that's carrying tapeworm larvae. It’s a vicious cycle! Most pet owners don't realize their cat has them until they see those "rice grains" or notice their kitty is losing weight despite a big appetite.

That is why we love NexGard COMBO. It is the only all-in-one protection that covers fleas, ticks, and heartworms while ALSO treating those pesky tapeworms. One easy topical application and your fur baby is fully protected!

We want to keep your family and your pets safe and healthy. If you have spotted any of these red flags or just want to get your cat on the best protection available, we are here to help!

Easter basket hazards you might be missing this weekend! 🐰 While we're all looking forward to some treats and family time, it's important to keep our furry family members safe.

Watch out for the chocolate stash, it’s toxic! Keep that plastic Easter grass away from curious mouths too, as it can cause serious digestive blockages. If you have cats, please be extra careful with lilies; even a tiny bit of pollen is deadly for our feline friends. Don't forget that sugar-free candies often contain Xylitol, and those tasty fatty holiday scraps can lead to painful tummy issues like pancreatitis.

We want your weekend to be all about the fun and none of the emergencies!

Have a wonderful and safe holiday!
