Today marks 5 years since Sgt. Jim Smith’s end of watch. His service, leadership, and sacrifice are not forgotten.

In his honor, several of our team members completed the Sgt. Smith Hero WOD—pushing through together the same way he always showed up for others.

We remember. We honor. We carry it forward.

Director Sheila Russell spent the latter part of last week in Michigan working with peer support members, sharing insights on mental wellness, peer support skills, resilience, and post-traumatic growth.

A big thank you to the Sterling Heights Police Department for the opportunity to collaborate and support this important work!

We have been busy doing one of things we love the most - serving those who serve us!! January and February were spent providing mental wellness to DMPD and WDMPD’s in-service training for their certified officers and command staff.

Long gone are the days of simply accepting the “suck it up buttercup,” model. The neuroscience is clear that the countless exposures and experiences of human violence, horror, grief & loss, and moral injury take its toll.

Reach out, complete your calls by doing the good trauma treatment work, and engage in activities that are good for your parasympathetic (rest and recover) nervous system!

CISM debriefings are one of the most real-time ties after a critical incident that we currently utilize in the first responder world.

We are meant to be connected to others in times of tragedy and heinous events, not alone. Today we had dispatch, LEOs, fire, flight crew and medics come together to process and support one another.

Survivors - you are not alone.

Grief after a Line of Duty Death can be overwhelming—and confusing, especially when the world expects you to “be okay” once the services are over.

Join us for a 1-hour live webinar with C.O.P.S. Training Director Bob Currier and mental health professional & C.O.P.S. Chapter Success Coach Amy Morgan as they talk about the realities survivors face, including grief waves, trauma responses, anger, guilt, and the mental replay that can make it hard to move forward.

We are so blessed to have a strong partnership with Iowa Law Enforcement Academy! One thing we hear constantly from officers who are more seasoned in law enforcement is that there are a lot more calls involving mental health nowadays.

CIT is an important aspect of officer training to assist with being more informed, better prepared, it increases community and officer safety, as well as assists with a reduction of compassion fatigue and occupational burnout.

Team member, Lindsay Smith, assisted with a Critical Incident Debriefing last night at Post 9. A Law Enforcement career exposes officers to some of the most horrific sides of society & humanity. These challenging experiences have become a platform to develop robust wellness bureaus, trauma therapists, and crisis interventions to support the individuals who are brave enough to wear the badge.

Humbly serving those who serve.
