What is Blepharoplasty?
Eyelid surgery, or Blepharoplasty, is one of the most commonly requested procedures among both men and women. It is a procedure to remove excess skin and fat from the eyelids in order to give a more youthful appearance. The aging face is associated with a loss of elasticity in the eyelid, which results in tired, sagging, or puffy lids.
What is Ptosis?
Ptosis of the upper lid, or brow Ptosis, is an Eye Condition approach to either elevate the brow or repair the levator muscle in the upper lid. A Blepharoplasty is a relatively short procedure with a hidden incision and minimal downtime. Mild swelling and bruising last approximately one week, after which time the sutures are removed. Our aesthetician can provide you with a skin recovery plan to help in your facial rejuvenation.
Who is a Good Candidate for Eyelid Surgery?
Most of us over the age of 40 are good candidates for eyelid surgery, and that applies to both women and men. This is because the eyes are the focal point of the face, and aging eyes make you look older and tired. And these effects don’t care whether you’re a woman or a man. Good candidates for Blepharoplasty still have a good tone in their facial muscles and tissue. Most candidates are 40 or older. Only people with eye diseases are not able to have eyelid surgery, at least until their condition has been addressed.

What is Pinkeye?
Conjunctivitis, commonly referred to as pink eye, is an infection or inflammation of the conjunctiva, the membrane that lines the eyelid and covers the white part of the eyeball.
Pink Eye Symptoms
Inflammation affects the blood vessels in the eye and gives the eye and a pink or red appearance. Other common symptoms of conjunctivitis include:

Itchiness in one or both eyes
A discharge that may become crusty overnight
Excessive tearing
A feeling of grittiness in the eye
Conjunctivitis can be highly contagious, for up to several weeks after signs and symptoms have begun. Prompt treatment can protect others from becoming infected.
What Causes Pink Eye?
Pink eye can be caused by either a bacterial or viral infection, an allergic reaction, a foreign object in the eye or a blocked tear duct. Conjunctivitis can be contagious, so proper diagnosis and prompt treatment are important.
Pink Eye Treatment Options
Treatment for pink eye depends on the cause. Bacterial conjunctivitis treatment often includes prescribed antibiotic eye drops or ointment. There is no treatment for viral conjunctivitis and the symptoms eventually ease over time as the virus clears. However, if the viral cause is the herpes simplex virus, antiviral medication may be prescribed. If the cause of the conjunctivitis is allergies, it may be treated with antihistamines to control allergic reactions or decongestants, steroids and anti-inflammatory drops to treat inflammation. Our expert team will provide you with the upmost diligence in determining your treatment plan.

Vitreous Detachments
A vitreous detachment is a common condition for people over 50 and very common for those who are 80 and older. People who are nearsighted also are more likely to have a vitreous detachment.

What causes a vitreous detachment?
Most of the eye's interior is filled with vitreous.
Millions of fine fibers are intertwined within the vitreous that are attached to the surface of the retina.
As we age, the vitreous slowly shrinks and these fibers pull on the retinal surface.
Usually the fibers break. The vitreous separates (detaches) and shrinks from the retina.
Symptoms of vitreous detachment
As the vitreous shrinks, it becomes stringy. These strands can cast tiny shadows on the retina. They look like floaters that cross your field of vision.

Treatment
A vitreous detachment doesn't threaten your sight, but occasionally some of the fibers pull so hard they create a macular hole on the retina or lead to a retinal detachment. If the macular hole does not heal itself, surgery may be necessary to improve vision.

Diabetic Eye Care
Your body can be affected by diabetes in many ways. It can affect your vision by causing cataracts, glaucoma and damage to the blood vessels in your eyes. Studies indicate that people with untreated diabetes are 25 times more at risk for blindness. The longer you have diabetes, the greater the risk of developing diabetic retinopathy.

Responsibility of diabetes patients
It is very important for patients to take very good care of themselves to help prevent diabetic retinopathy. Patients should have regular medical eye exams and try to maintain good blood sugar levels, good blood pressure, and avoid smoking.

Diabetic retinopathy
The symptoms of background diabetic retinopathy usually go unnoticed until you have an eye exam, or there has been a significant loss in vision. Proliferative retinopathy usually causes hazy, spotty, painless changes in your vision that require immediate medical attention.

Frequent eye exams are extremely important in controlling any diabetic changes in the eyes. If diabetic retinopathy is found on an eye exam, a fluorescein angiography may be ordered to find out if treatment is needed. Fluorescein angiography is a test wherein dye is injected into the veins of your arm and photos are taken to see if there is any leakage from the blood vessels.

An early stage of diabetic retinopathy is background diabetic retinopathy. In this stage, small blood vessels leak in the retina, causing swelling and the formation of deposits called exudates. Leaking fluid in the retina can cause macular edema, a condition that can negatively affect your vision and close work.

Proliferative retinopathy
In proliferative retinopathy, new, abnormal blood vessels growing on the abnormal blood vessel growth is referred to as neovascularization. These new blood vessels are weak, and often break or bleed inside the eye. When bleeding occurs, it prevents the light entering the pupil from properly reaching the retina, causing blurred vision. The new, abnormal blood vessels may grow scar tissue that pull on the retina, which can lead to retinal detachment.

Dry Eyes
The tear film is made up of three layers: an oil layer, a water layer and a mucus layer. If there is dysfunction of any layer of the tear film, it can cause dry eyes.

There are many factors that can contribute to dry eyes, including age, environmental influences, side effects of medications, certain medical conditions, contact lenses and hormonal changes. Symptoms of dry eye may include:

Increased tearing
Burning
A scratchy or gritty feeling
Red, irritated eyes
Treatment is dependent on which layer(s) of the tear film are involved. Some treatment options may include artificial tears, lid hygiene, topical cyclosporine, punctal plugs and omega fatty acid supplements.

Contact Physicians Eye Clinic if you feel you have dry eye symptoms and would like to discuss treatment options.
