At Connect Therapy, we start with functional words. đź’›

These are words toddlers can use right away to communicate their needs, make choices, and feel understood—like more, go, eat, help, yes, and no. When a child learns words that work for them in daily life, communication becomes meaningful, motivating, and empowering.

Functional words reduce frustration, support independence, and lay the foundation for longer phrases and conversations later on. Before we worry about labels or perfect pronunciation, we focus on words that give toddlers a voice.

Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) includes tools and strategies—like picture boards, speech-generating devices, gestures, and signs—that support communication. AAC can help children and adults who have difficulty using spoken language express their wants, needs, thoughts, and ideas.

AAC is not a last resort, and it doesn’t replace speech—it supports communication and empowers individuals at any stage of their journey. Communication is a human right.

What Is Aphasia?

Aphasia is a language disorder caused by damage to the brain, most often from a stroke, brain injury, or neurological condition.

Aphasia can impact a person’s ability to:

Speak

Understand spoken language

Read

Write

💡 Intelligence is NOT affected. Aphasia changes how language is processed—not how someone thinks.

What Aphasia Can Look Like

Trouble finding words

Saying the wrong word or sound

Difficulty following conversations

Challenges reading or writing

Knowing what you want to say but not being able to say it

Aphasia Looks Different for Everyone

There are different types and severities of aphasia. Some people speak a lot but have trouble making sense. Others speak very little but understand well.

How Speech Therapy Helps

Speech-language pathologists help individuals with aphasia:

Rebuild language skills

Learn new ways to communicate (AAC, gestures, writing)

Practice real-life communication

Support confidence and participation

How to Support Someone With Aphasia

Be patient and give time

Use simple language

Offer choices

Encourage all forms of communication

Listen—don’t rush or correct

Coach caregivers on ways to best communicate

Supporting your child’s speech doesn’t have to be complicated—it happens in everyday moments. Talking through routines, reading together, playing, and celebrating effort can make a powerful difference over time.

Progress isn’t always loud or fast, but small, consistent interactions build confidence and communication skills that last. You’re doing more than you think.

Save this for later, and share it with a parent who could use a little encouragement today.

Did you know speech language pathologists can help chronic cough?

A recent client had experienced a chronic cough for 25 years. Her cough negatively impacted her life, making it so she no longer went to the grocery store and avoided social situations. She had tried every medical intervention, seen every specialist and finally gave speech therapy at Connect Therapy a try.

After a few sessions, she had learned cough suppression techniques that worked for her. She was even able to attend her grandson's Christmas program for two and half hours, without coughing!

If you or someone you know is experiencing chronic cough, we'd love to help!
