As we transition from summer in September, we are in Vata season as fall approaches. The vata constitution is made up of air/ether/space elements and we all have these constitutions within us to varying degrees. Vata represents movement, creativity,
flexibility and sharp wit. As we transition into autumn when Vata is dominant, we can get thrown off balance internally. This seasonal shift represents cooler temperatures, dryness and variable characteristics. We are vulnerable to colds as our bodies adjust to the changing of seasons. Too much vata in our systems can cause anxiety, fear and nervousness.
Routine is the container of air and space element. To balance excess vata and the more active and spontaneous summer months; slow down your physical activities and schedule rest and quiet time into your calendar. Listen to soothing or rhythmic music, read or sit in silence. This is a great time to try or recommit to meditation. Walking in nature is always grounding. Diffuse essential oils of earthy scents like sandalwood, patchouli and sage.
Stay well hydrated with warming herbal teas (no cold water!) Make soups, stews and chilis with warming spices like cinnamon, turmeric, black pepper and chili.
Wear cozy sweats and fuzzy socks that wrap you in comfort. Long cuddles with furry or people friends will help calm the nervous system.
Try these approaches to ground yourself during Vata/Fall season and set your seasonal routine.
Fall hugs to all!
