Dr. Shannon Vander Doelen, ND

Dr. Shannon Vander Doelen, ND Naturopathic Doctor in Toronto and Virtually Online Hey! I'm Dr. Shannon, it's nice to e-meet you! I work with women who, simply put, want to feel (really!) well.

I'm a Naturopathic Doctor who focuses on Women's Health, Fertiliy and Pregnancy. I believe all women are capable of doing amazing things when we can count on our health to be there for us (including, but not limited to breaking glass ceilings, running marathons, building a family, or all 3 at once). My goal is to inspire and empower women to choose their health so that they can do more of what they love and be there for those who matter to them most. It's important that you know that I solve problems, I don't treat conditions - I look at you as a person and take into consideration all that you have going on. I won't take away your morning coffee or force you go on a gluten free diet. I want to help you to balance your hormones, improve your fertility, get pregnant (if that's what you want right now), and feel really awesome. I encourage you to book in for a 15 minute complimentary meet and greet visit so we can make sure we're the match - you can do that by clicking the "Book Now" button up top! For more information, please visit my website at www.shannonND.ca

Here’s the truth: navigating your fertility can feel overwhelming, but you don’t have to do it alone.

🟢 What’s in this year?
• Eating breakfast to fuel your hormones
• Supporting your nervous system (let's calm that fight or flight response right down)
• Acupuncture based on your cycle
• Partner health—it takes two to make a healthy baby.
• Adding plant-based protein to your diet
• Building a care team that has your back

❌ What’s out?
• Super restrictive diets - carbs are good for your hormones btw.
• Intermittent fasting for fertility
• Magical “superfoods” that overpromise
• Navigating this journey solo
• Not getting the answers you deserve to make informed decisions

Whether you're hoping to conceive or just want to optimize your hormonal health, I’m here to guide you with evidence-based care and personalized support. 💛 Let’s make this your year.

This weekend is Father's Day - a day that can be challenging for a lot of people.

So this weekend, while I celebrate the incredible dads in my life, I'll also be thinking about these dads too.

👋 hey! I'm back! 👇

It's been a few hot minutes since I posted here on but I'm excited to be back on this platform and hopefully back to providing you the science-based (and naturally-focused) info you've been looking for about all things fertility, hormones and pregnancy.

I have something else exciting to announce very soon too - but I have to leave you in a bit of suspense, right?

If you're curious, here's what I've been up to since I last posted:

👨‍👩‍👧‍👧 my girls are now 5.5 and 1.5, the time is flying and I'm trying to soak it all in.

🎵 I've become a country music fan.

🏝I went on my first trip away from both kiddos to celebrate my gf's (and fellow ND) bachelorette.

🏋️‍♀️ I've been consistent with exercise for one of the first times in my life and it feels so good!

📖 I've been voraciously reading thriller fiction novels.

👩‍💻 And, I've been continuing to see patients virtually!

I've missed being connected on here and am excited to be back. ✨

To say that I’ve struggled to share this update would be an understatement (and typical me, probably over-thinking the whole thing)

A few months ago I had shared glimpses of my IVF journey on here, and then I kind of went silent about it.

So the update is: thanks to the incredible combo of IVF, naturopathic medicine and acupuncture, I’m 32 weeks pregnant. I’ve been a bit nervous to tell you about it - because a lot of you maybe follow me here because I share mainly about infertility (and all that goes with it). AND I know first hand that when you are going through some version of it, it can feel like a punch in the gut to see someone else’s pregnancy announcement (not because you’re not happy for them, but you’re just really wanting that to be your reality too).

This pregnancy has been just a wee bit complicated right from the get-go, so I also didn’t know if I was going to stay pregnant. While I’ve also shared on here in the past about my own experience of miscarriage/pregnancy loss, I didn’t know how ready I was to go through that publicly on the 'gram. So I kept this news close to my heart and to our closest people. A few weeks ago, I shared the news with my current patients (because as their health care provider, I also need to share logistics with them about maternity leave and coverage for their naturopathic care). Since I mainly work with patients virtually, most of them wouldn’t know because they’re seeing me over a screen!

Because I’ve always been a bit of an open book on here, I wanted to share this news with you too - and I wanted you to know in case you were hoping to book in for a visit with me - I’ll be off on mat leave starting Dec. 15th so we have 1 month left to connect! If you need more info - send me a DM or take a look at the link in my bio about how to connect.

I'm so grateful to have had this community over the last 2 years of my own fertility journey - it's through your sharing too that I've felt less alone.

Thank you, thank you, thank you 🤍

October is Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness Month, with this upcoming Saturday, October 15th being Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness Day.

The purpose of and is to acknowledge and remember these losses, these babies, and the unique grief that families experience.

If you're a part of the club, you probably don't need a reminder. And you might find being on social media hard. I know I have. This month is hopefully something that can help you to remember you are not alone, to feel seen and connected.

Sunnybrook Hospital also operates the “Pregnancy & Infant Loss (PAIL) Network” Facebook Group which serves as a safe and friendly environment for families who have lost a pregnancy or whose baby has died to explore different aspects of their grief through reading about others’ experiences, and learning about the larger community of pregnancy and infant loss.

You may also consider participating in the International Wave of Light - At 7pm local time on October 15 people all over the world will light candles in memory of their beloved babies. Due to different time zones this will form a continuous wave of light going around the Earth.

If you know someone who has experienced a loss, reach out to them this month. Talk to them about their baby. Say their baby's name if you know it. You acknowledging them and their loss probably won’t trigger them negatively (and if it does they’ll let you know), but it will help them feel less alone in their grief.

My inbox is always open to anyone who needs some support ❤

Have you ever used progesterone suppositories?

If my memory serves me right, Rachel probably didn't 😂

But if you have, you'll know this feeling - pumped at the idea of something new in your plan that might help you finally get to your goal. And then reality sets in... they are kind of annoying and gross, right?

Here are my tried and true tips for progesterone suppository success:
1️⃣ Insert before bed - then you will be lying down for the night, and that will likely result in less leakage, because gravity is working on your side (twice or three time-per-day friends, sorry! If time permits, try lying down for 15-20 mins after you insert)
2️⃣ Wear a panty liner (or invest in leak-proof un**es - are incredible and totally worth the investment IMO)
3️⃣ Insert the suppository as high into the vaginal canal as possible - ask the pharmacy or your clinic if you can get an applicator (which you use like a tampon)
4️⃣ If you are noticing any irritation or discomfort - talk to your prescribing doctor! There may be another formulation you can try (e.g. compounded progesterone, vs. prometrium)

Share this with a friend who might need a laugh over this *not so fun* part of TTC.
