❓ Myth or Fact?

It takes 10-15 years for post-traumatic osteoarthritis to develop after an ACL tear.

MYTH

While patients may not report symptoms for many years, radiographic changes can be detected much earlier.

In the BEAR I and II studies, six-year follow-up - representing some of the longest prospective data available in ACL research - provided meaningful insight into PTOA progression and supported an FDA-approved label update for the BEAR Implant, making it the first and only sports medicine product with a reduced PTOA risk claim following ACL injury.

ICYMI: The BEAR Implant is the first sports medicine product to include an FDA-approved label claim related to a reduced risk of developing post-traumatic osteoarthritis (PTOA) following ACL injury.

PTOA can affect knee health long after recovery from surgery. There is no cure, and available treatments focus on managing symptoms rather than restoring joint health, which is why the risk of developing PTOA matters when discussing ACL treatment options.

❓ Myth or Fact?

ACL reconstruction is associated with a higher risk of developing post-traumatic osteoarthritis (PTOA) than the BEAR Implant.

FACT.

Patients who had ACL reconstruction had a 6x higher rate of developing PTOA than patients treated with the BEAR Implant.

These outcomes were observed among patients treated with the BEAR Implant in the BEAR I and II clinical studies and supported an updated claim in the BEAR Implant label regarding reduced risk of PTOA – the first of its kind, underscoring the importance of long-term joint health when evaluating ACL treatment options.

Did you know that patients treated with ACL reconstruction have a 6x higher rate of post-traumatic osteoarthritis (PTOA) compared to those treated with the BEAR Implant?

The BEAR Implant is also the first and only sports medicine product to include a label claim related to reduced PTOA risk.

Long-term knee health deserves a place in the ACL treatment conversation.

Spins were one of the scariest parts of getting back on the slopes for pro skier Kelsey Wittels.

Coming back to skiing after ACL surgery isn’t just physical.

Landing a 360 means trusting your knee through twisting forces, split-second timing, and muscle memory that doesn’t disappear overnight. Kelsey shares what it felt like to land pain-free again and regain confidence, one spin at a time.

January is National Learn to Ski & Snowboard Month.

No matter who’s learning or where they start, skiing places unique demands on the knee, and ACL injuries remain one of the most common knee injuries in the sport.

The BEAR Implant is designed to help the body heal its own ACL, instead of replacing it with a graft.

🎿 That distinction matters when returning to snow.

Earlier this week we announced that the FDA approved a label update for the BEAR Implant to include a reduced risk of developing post-traumatic osteoarthritis (PTOA) following ACL injury.

Gregory S DiFelice, MD shares his perspective on why long-term knee health and osteoarthritis risk should be part of the ACL treatment discussion, not just short-term recovery and return to play.

Yesterday, the FDA approved a label update for the BEAR Implant, making it the first sports medicine product with a claim related to reduced post-traumatic osteoarthritis (PTOA) risk following ACL injury.

This is significant news for patients and physicians treating ACL tears and underscores the importance of considering how different treatment options may influence knee health years beyond surgery.
