No two individuals with autism are the same, even among siblings! Sometimes these differences aren’t as extreme as listed here, but certainly can be.

It’s very common for both siblings to be Autistic, but for only one to get a diagnosis early (or ever!) because they present so differently.

While this example includes two very different autism presentations, differences don’t have to be this extreme. However, it is true that usually one sibling is more stereotypically autistic and has higher support needs while the later or underdiagnosed sibling is non stereotypical with lower support needs (and often diagnosed AHDH in my experience, although Autism and ADHD would be more appropriate).

❄️ 📚 This time of year, academic concerns often become clearer 🔍
As we move through winter, many parents start to notice that certain learning struggles feel more obvious.

By now, schools have:
• Fall baseline data
• Winter benchmark data
• Classroom observations across several months
• Information about how routines, expectations, and academic demands are landing for your child

This means there is meaningful information available about your child’s growth, progress, and areas of challenge.

Here are a few helpful questions you can consider asking your child’s teacher:

• How is my child progressing compared to expectations for this point in the year?
• Are there patterns you’re noticing across subjects or settings?
• Is my child responding as expected to classroom instruction and interventions?
• Are challenges becoming more noticeable as academic demands increase?
• What data or observations are guiding your concerns or reassurance?
• Do you feel additional support should be considered at this point?

Early awareness leads to clearer answers and more targeted support. Asking questions does not mean something is “wrong.” It means you’re being proactive!

We love helping families make sense of school data, understand what it means, and decide on next steps with confidence. If you’re wondering whether your child’s challenges are part of normal development or something that deserves a closer look, support is available! Give us a call: 614-681-0343

🤔 IEP vs. 504 Plan, what’s the difference?

💡 Both support students with disabilities, but they serve different purposes. An IEP provides specially designed instruction with individualized goals and services. A 504 Plan provides accommodations to ensure equal access to learning, without specialized instruction.

💡The right plan depends on how a child’s needs impact learning at school, not the diagnosis alone.

🤝 With our deep experience in school systems, our evaluations include specific recommendations and guidance to help families understand what level of support may be needed and how to navigate the school process with confidence!

The to-do list may seem “simple,” but there is so much more that goes into it and with executive functioning challenges things can get overwhelming fast. We help bring clarity and direction by pinpointing specific needs! 💚

Executive functioning skills play a major role in homework! And, there is more to it than just doing a homework assignment. There is actually a school and a home aspect that involves EF skills like organization, attention, task completion, working memory, impulse control, and other skills.

The thing is that development of these skills isn't complete until 30 years of age, so having tools and strategies in place is key for each step.

At school there can be supports for each step:
1. Writing down the assignment in an agenda
2. Putting all of the needed materials into the backpack: books, tablet/device, papers, folders, etc.
3. And then turning in the assignment when it is due: locating the assignments and other items

At home, there are several stages as well:
1. Locating the homework assignment and all items in the backpack
2. Doing the assignment completely according to the timeline and requirements
3. Putting the completed assignment back into the backpack or folder along with other materials

Our practice specializes in identifying non-stereotypical presentations of Autism. This graphic does a nice job explaining how that may present!

Autism can look many different ways - and when it presents in non-stereotypical ways (which is common in but not exclusive to girls/afab) it’s often missed - leaving people without support, or without the *right* support.

Kids who present with this non-stereotypical profile of Autism are often socially motivated - which leads people to disregard a possible autism diagnosis up front, but autism does not (always) mean socially avoidant.

I also use “Autism in girls” as a shortcut to help undiagnosed girls get more visibility but *MANY* boys and nonbinary people have this presentation- including my own son ❤️
