As a psychiatrist, I’m reminded that Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s work was not only a moral and social revolution, but also a profound statement on mental health and human dignity.

Dr. King understood that injustice, racism and violence leave deep psychological wounds—on individuals and on entire communities. He spoke openly about fear, fatigue, hope and resilience, long before we had the language of trauma-informed care. His commitment to nonviolence required emotional regulation, empathy and an unwavering belief in the worth of every human being.

Today, we honor Dr. King by continuing the work of healing—challenging systems that harm mental well-being, listening deeply to those in pain and choosing compassion even when it is difficult.

“Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that.”

May we keep choosing the light. 🕊️
