Subject: Westfield Rescue Squad Teaches Medical Emergency Class at Library
The Westfield Volunteer Rescue Squad recently taught 12 members of the staff of the Westfield Memorial Library how to recognize time-sensitive emergencies and provided hands-on training on what to do before help arrives. The class included information geared towards their customers, including pediatric patients.
Very few medical emergencies require immediate action other than calling 9-1-1. Residents of Westfield are fortunate to have multiple levels of emergency medical services nearby, including police, firefighters, EMTs, and paramedics. They will arrive in minutes after a call to 911 to start care. This class covered situations in which immediate recognition and care before help arrives will improve the patientās outcome.
The class included the following topics:
Recognizing an emergency.
Hands-only CPR and AED training ā both for when someoneās heart stops.
Narcan administration āwhen someone stops breathing due to an opioid overdose.
Choking emergencies, both adult and pediatric.
Signs of a Stroke.
Controlling severe bleeding.
The Westfield Volunteer Rescue Squad has provided free emergency medical services to the Town of Westfield for close to 75 years. It is funded entirely by tax-deductible charitable donations.
