A mother goose and her babies visited our Kanas Center for Hospice Care. It was a heartwarming moment, offering a delightful reminder of nature’s simple beauty and the gentle continuity of life.

It’s Patient Safety Awareness Week! Ongoing training, frequent drills, and regular assessments ensure that our team remains alert and prepared to respond quickly in an emergency. Drills at our Kanas Center for Hospice Care improve the safety of patients, staff, and visitors. Disaster plans protect the well-being of our home hospice patients in situations like the recent brush fires in our area.

Here is our headquarters. It may not look like much, but inside this building we coordinate the care of hundreds of patients each day. We answer more than one thousand phone calls a week from families, hospitals, physicians and field staff. Without the dedicated people who work here, there would be no East End Hospice.

Just 24 hours ago, flames roared around this building damaging our storage structure and spilling into the parking lot. People have said it’s a miracle the building didn’t burn.

We know the truth.

It was the dedication and skill of our local fire departments that kept our Headquarters standing. In the early hours of the fire, we received very little information until a text came through from a firefighter on the ground-

“we saved hospice”

We will never forget that moment. These are volunteers leaving the ease of a Saturday afternoon to risk their lives to save others. We share the common bond of community and compassion, and because of their bravery we can continue to provide our care to patients across the East End.

We are overcome with gratitude for this special community and all of its first responders.

Sunday, March 9, 9:00am: Yesterday’s brush fire reached the perimeter of our offices. There is significant smoke damage and utilities are down. Crews are working to extinguish small fires in the area. We are extremely grateful to all emergency response crews, including 90+ volunteer fire departments from across our region, the Suffolk County Sheriff and Police Departments, the Air National Guard, and many others. Our staff and patients remain safe and our services are fully operational. Please check back for more updates.
