Last Thursday was a full day in community.

In the afternoon, we attended Agency 101 with the Ventura County Office of Education. The room was filled with educators and youth-serving professionals deeply invested in student mental health.

We had meaningful conversations about our Intensive Outpatient Programs, LGBTQIA+ groups, parent support groups, and Mindful Beginnings. There is so much care happening in our schools and agencies.

That evening, we joined colleagues at a and networking event at . What stood out most was the way professionals were introducing one another and speaking so positively about each other’s work.

That matters.

When providers collaborate instead of compete, families benefit.

We are grateful to be part of a mental health community that prioritizes youth and families across Ventura County and the Conejo Valley.

Belonging matters.

Many families reach out when weekly therapy no longer feels like enough, but inpatient care feels like too much.

Intensive Outpatient Programs, or IOP, offer a middle level of care. They provide structured support several days a week while youth remain connected to home, school, and family.

At Engage, our IOPs serve youth and young adults ages 10–25. We support anxiety, depression, mood challenges, and complex emotional needs through thoughtful assessment and collaborative, clinician-led care.

If you are local to Westlake Village, Agoura Hills, or the Conejo Valley and wondering whether IOP could be a fit, we are here to help you think it through.

“I’ve learned as a pediatrician. Listen to parents.
They’re not crazy.
They know what’s going on.”

In last week’s episode, Dr. Tanya Altmann joined us to talk about PANS and PANDAS, misdiagnosis, and what happens when parents sense something has shifted in their child.

For many families, sudden changes in behavior, tics, or mood can feel confusing and isolating. Too often, those concerns are minimized or dismissed.

This reminder matters. Parental intuition is real. Listening early can shape the path forward.

When a child changes overnight, it can be terrifying.

In this clip, Tanya Altmann, MD explains PANS and PANDAS—conditions where a child’s immune response to an infection can mistakenly affect the brain, leading to sudden anxiety, OCD symptoms, tics, or behavioral changes.

Parents often say: “This isn’t my child anymore.”
That fear deserves to be taken seriously.

This conversation is part of a collaboration between Engage Therapy and Calabasas Pediatrics, highlighting how pediatricians and mental health providers can work together when symptoms don’t fit neatly into one category.

If this resonates, you’re not alone—and it’s okay to keep asking questions.

When a child changes overnight, it can leave parents feeling scared, confused, and blamed.

But sometimes, what looks like a behavioral or mental health crisis is actually a medical puzzle—one that deserves curiosity, not judgment.

In this collaborative conversation on Look for the Helpers, Engage Therapy and Calabasas Pediatrics sit down with Dr. Tanya Altmann to explore conditions like PANS and PANDAS, which can cause sudden onset anxiety, OCD symptoms, tics, and emotional dysregulation—often following common childhood infections.

This episode is a reminder of how essential collaboration between pediatricians, therapists, and families can be when symptoms don’t fit neatly into one box.

🧠 Key reminders for parents:
• Sudden changes are worth investigating
• This is not a parenting failure
• Parents’ instincts matter
• Supporting kids often requires both medical and mental health care

At Engage Therapy, we support youth and families across the Conejo Valley and surrounding communities, and offer Intensive Outpatient (IOP) programs for youth and young adults ages 10–25 experiencing depression and anxiety.

Staff Spotlight: Rob Feeley, MD 💙

Medical Director & Episode 4 of “Look for the Helpers”
Dr. Rob Feeley has been Engage’s Medical Director since the pandemic, and his presence on our team has made all the difference.

How We Found Each Other
Blake first met Rob when they both worked at a practice in Calabasas. The impression was immediate: here was someone grounded, kind, and genuinely collaborative. In a field where those qualities aren’t always easy to find, Rob stood out.
When Adelina and Blake were building the team during the pandemic, Rob was one of the first major hires. It wasn’t just his clinical expertise - it was the alignment in values. As Rob puts it, “We care about clients and their care deeply - that’s where we align.” And we absolutely agree.

What Makes Rob Different
Rob approaches psychiatry with the understanding that medication is just one piece of comprehensive care. He listens. He collaborates with therapists, families, and clients. He sees the whole person, not just symptoms to manage.
His thoughtfulness and genuine care for the young people we serve at Engage make him not just an excellent psychiatrist, but the right psychiatrist for our programs.

Beyond Engage
Professionally, Rob maintains his private practice in Calabasas and consults with various treatment programs and levels of care. Personally, he’s a tennis player, father, and husband - someone who understands the importance of balance in life.

Listen to Episode 4
We sat down with Rob for Episode 4 of “Look for the Helpers, a podcast by Engage Therapy.” The conversation captures everything we appreciate about Rob - his thoughtfulness, his commitment to collaborative care, and his deep respect for the work. Link in bio to listen.
Rob, thank you for being such a grounding, collaborative presence on our team. We’re grateful for you. 💙

“I realized that Buddhism was almost like an ancient form of neuroscience.”

In this moment from Episode 04 of Look for the Helpers, Dr. Rob Feeley reflects on how mindfulness practices became a foundation for understanding himself — and connecting more deeply with others.

Meditation, breathwork, and self-awareness aren’t separate from clinical care. They’re part of how we learn to meet people where they are.

Psychiatry is more than a prescription.

A lot of people walk into psychiatric care carrying fear.
Fear of medication.
Fear of being rushed.
Fear of not being heard.

In Episode 04 of Look for the Helpers, our Medical Director, Dr. Rob Feeley, talks about something foundational:

Psychiatry doesn’t start with a prescription.
It starts with safety.

When people feel safe, trust can form.
When trust is present, decisions become collaborative.
Thoughtful.
Human.

This conversation explores an integrative approach to care—one that values neuroscience, wisdom, and meeting people exactly where they are.

Last Friday, we had the privilege of welcoming Dr. Deanna Dow into our space for a 3-hour, deeply thoughtful training with our clinical team.

Dr. Dow spent the morning with us sharing best practices for supporting youth and young adults on the autism spectrum across our Intensive Outpatient Programs, group therapy, and day-to-day clinical work. The conversation was practical, nuanced, and grounding — exactly the kind of learning that strengthens care from the inside out.

Together, we:
• Consulted on real clinical cases
• Re-examined how we structure and facilitate groups
• Thought carefully about how we define and measure treatment goals
• Explored ways to better support social connection
• Even looked at how our physical space can be more supportive for neurodivergent clients

Dr. Dow is the founder of , a Los Angeles–based practice offering comprehensive psychological testing, individual therapy, occupational therapy, medication management, breathwork, yoga, and support groups — all through a neurodiversity-affirming lens.

We’re still processing everything we learned — in the best way.
Thank you, Dr. Dow, for your generosity, expertise, and for spending time with our team here in Westlake Village. We’re grateful to keep learning how to do this work more thoughtfully and more inclusively.

Staff Spotlight: Terry Carroll 💙

Family Therapist & Parent Educator
Terry Carroll has been part of Engage’s Intensive Outpatient Programs for many years, and her impact on the families we serve is undeniable.

What Makes Terry Special
Terry is a force - in the best possible way. She brings deep knowledge and training in working with families and parents, combined with a straightforward personality that isn’t afraid to say what needs to be said. Some therapists dance around the hard stuff. Terry doesn’t. She shows up with honesty, clarity, and a genuine commitment to helping families move forward.

Her background includes equine-assisted therapy and running her own practice, experiences that have shaped how she approaches the work. She understands that healing happens in different ways for different families, and she’s not afraid to meet people exactly where they are.

Always Learning, Always Growing
One of the things we admire most about Terry? Her commitment to expanding her craft. She’s constantly seeking new ways to help more families. Recently, she shadowed Peggy Matson to learn how to facilitate our Reflective Parenting Program (RPP) classes.

RPP is a therapeutic parenting program that helps parents understand their children’s emotional world and strengthen their parent-child relationship. It’s powerful work, and Terry’s dedication to learning it shows how seriously she takes serving families.

Why Families Trust Her
Terry has been a long-standing part of our programs because families respond to her approach. They appreciate her directness. They trust her expertise. And they know she’s not just showing up to do a job - she’s showing up because she genuinely cares about helping them build healthier, stronger family connections.
Terry, thank you for your years of dedication to this work and to the families at Engage. Your impact is felt every single day. 💙
