Just received this email from one of our students.

Hi Stephan,

I saved a 96 year old woman from choking on a massive piece of steak at a Mother’s Day dinner! My husband and our family were supposed to sit inside that night but they moved us outside next to this particular family. Just as we were finishing our meal we see a man standing up patting an elderly woman’s back. I jumped up to get her into the Heimlich position and started immediately. I made eye contact with a server and told him directly to call 911. This wasn’t my first time giving the Heimlich but it was my husbands. He switched off with me because he is much bigger and between the two of us we got the steak (at least a 2 inch piece) out just as she started to go lifeless.

My husband and I made a good team and it definitely gave him the confidence to do it again (hopefully not). It was also a good lesson for my oldest who babysits. I told our family and friends the stories about people running to the bathroom when they choke. I hope that will remind them to follow someone and if that happens.

I am so glad Mother’s Day for that family ended on a good note. Thank you for teaching me to skills and giving me the confidence!

See you at the next renewal!

Shannon

Do you know the difference between a heart attack and cardiac arrest?

05/30/2014

Received a phone call this afternoon from a student who took a CPR class last night. At about 12noon today this mom was at the park with her 9 month old son. He started choking on a strawberry with all the signs (crying with no noise, lips turning blue). The mom provided about 3 sets of 5 back blows and 5 chest thrusts and the strawberry popped out and he was ok. This shows that you just never know when it can happen. This happened within 24 hours of taking the class.

I want to thank everyone for a Great 2013. I wanted to share this email I received on Christmas Eve.

Hello,
I took your CPR class a few months ago, I was with Leslie we were the two medical assistance students. I wanna just say thank you for teaching me everything. Today I was working Christmas Eve and my coworker Rick went down. I was coming back to work and saw he was lying on the floor with a few other if my coworkers. With out even thought I checked the area (my work ) then proceeded to him. He has no pulse so I started CPR. I did chest compressions for 10mins until paramedics arrived and got him stable. I was told I saved his life , which is a really good feeling. I couldn't believe my reaction was so quick I didn't have to think. That feeling of helping is why I wanted to be in the medical field. So thank you for giving me the tools to do so.
