Hashimotos thyroiditis is an autoimmune condition in which the body attacks the thyroid gland, leading to a chronic destructive process. While it is the most common cause of hypothyroidism, it is often overlooked and is still not fully understood. Thyroid autoimmune diseases are one of the most common autoimmune disorders seen in the US.

Common treatment for Hashimotos thyroiditis is typically thyroxine replacement. In some cases, a combination of thyroxine T4 and T3 are used. While this may alleviate some of the symptoms associated with autoimmune thyroid disease, it fails to address the underlying problem. In fact, in some cases, you may actually feel worse with the thyroid hormone replacement. This problem is related to fact that standard thyroid screening often misses this autoimmune disorder, and traditional health care professionals are not trained to look for the underlying triggers that drive Hashimotos disease.

Dr. Ruby is board certified in Functional Medicine by the Institute of Functional Medicine. She has a Bachelor’s degree in Nursing from UMBC, and a Master’s Degree in Trauma/Critical Care from UMAB. She received her Post-Master’s Adult Nurse Practitioner certification from Johns Hopkins University and her DNP Clinical Doctorate from the University of Maryland at Baltimore.

She started her Nursing Career in 1983 and has been a Nurse Practitioner for over 25 years. After practicing in a traditional Endocrinology practice for 10 years she transitioned her practice to Functional Medicine and Integrative Endocrinology with a primary focus on thyroid disease, Hashimotos Thyroiditis and Metabolic Disorders such as PCOS (polycystic ovarian syndrome).

She knows first-hand what it feels like to have multiple chronic symptoms and be told that there is “nothing wrong with you”. She recognizes that chronic disease management is not a “quick fix” and has dedicated her practice to getting to the Root Cause of chronic disease over the past 10 years.

Dr. Ruby is expanding her services to include an Integrative Medicine Approach, where she will accept several insurances. This will allow her and her team to work with clients in an integrative fashion who are either not ready or not interested in a more comprehensive functional medicine approach. She also understands that the cash-based services for Functional Medicine are not affordable for everyone and has created a bridge program to blend Integrative & Functional Medicine to make our services more accessible.
