The Story of Skyward Counseling
I first began Skyward Counseling in 2017 after receiving my MA degree from Regis University. I chose the name Skyward Counseling after thinking of the mythological bird, the caladrius. According to Roman mythology, this bird would fly into the windows of the sick, take on their illness, and then disperse the illness into the sky where it would be burned by the sun. I thought this was a lovely metaphor for the therapeutic process: as the client shares their story, illness, or mental anguish it starts to lessen for them, and they begin to heal.
Before going into private practice, I completed my internship at People House, and my practicum hours at the Gestalt Equine Institute of the Rockies. During my internship, I co-facilitated support groups with the Colorado Ovarian Cancer Alliance, and began accruing hours towards my Licensed Addiction Counselor credential which I recieved in 2019. I hold a second Master’s Degree in Literary Studies from the University of Denver (DU) where I specialized in war literature, and the poetics of trauma.
In addition to my academic studies, I served in the United States Army Reserves from 2003-2010 where I deployed under Operation Iraqi Freedom from 2005-2006. I was honorably discharged with the rank of Sergeant.
Since starting my private practice, I have continued my education through numerous workshops, trainings, and voracious reading. I have recieved certifications for addiction counseling, Acudetox, and training in EMDR. My specialties include: addiction/ recovery (both chemical and process addictions), trauma, anxiety, depression, grief, and military family issues.
