New research indicates that popular weight-loss medications such as Ozempic and Wegovy may carry additional risks beyond their commonly known side effects. In a large study involving nearly 150,000 patients, individuals using GLP-1 drugs were found to have a higher likelihood of developing bone and tendon-related issues.

Over a five-year period, users showed nearly a 30% increased risk of osteoporosis and about a 12% higher risk of gout. There was also a notable rise in a rarer condition that weakens and softens bones.

While the study does not establish a direct cause-and-effect relationship, researchers suggest that rapid weight loss and possible nutrient deficiencies could be contributing factors.

Despite these findings, medical experts emphasize that these medications still offer significant benefits, including substantial weight loss and a reduced risk of heart disease. They now recommend closer monitoring, along with adequate nutrition and strength training, to help maintain bone health during treatment.
