Naming how we feel helps diffuse the intensity of the emotion and increase our self-awareness. Emotions serve an adaptive role and provide us with important information about our physical and emotional well-being. Instead of judging emotions as negative or positive, be curious about what your emotional response may be telling you.

Feeling surprised, anxious, insecureโ€ฆ take a deep breath and a few minutes to ask yourself:

What is happening in my body?
Why is this emotion coming up now?
What in my environment triggered this emotion?
Was I reminded of an unresolved issue?
What is the thought (core belief) behind my emotion?
How am I responding (behaviors, actions) to this emotion?
What do I need now to better cope (self soothe or regulate) with the situation while allowing myself to experience this emotion?
