7. Citrus Fruits
Whether you like to squeeze fresh orange juice or enjoy a tart half-grapefruit in the morning, citrus fruits are a true bounty for seniors to get your daily allowance of vitamin C. Did you know that one of the key factors that reduce the functioning of the immune system as we get older is due to deficiencies in this all-important vitamin?
Not just for breakfast, fresh slices of oranges can be great palate cleansers after any meal. And all types of citrus can serve as refreshing additions to ice-cold water or sparkling water to stay hydrated (and vitamin-infused) all year long.
Being diligent about getting enough immune-boosting foods, particularly during times when colds, the flu, and other viruses are more prevalent, acts as a dedicated fighter for seniors against those harmful illnesses. If you are creative with your meal and snack planning, the possibilities are seemingly endless.

6. Pumpkin Seeds
Pumpkin seeds are not on a lot of people’s food radars. Most folks, if they don’t mind the gooey texture, have cleaned out a fresh pumpkin or two to make a jack-o-lantern for Halloween, throwing the seeds away with the sticky pulp. But pumpkin seeds are actually very high in the mineral zinc —an important component of a healthy immune system. Many seniors are deficient in the trace mineral, so eating pumpkin seeds can be a wonderful way to ramp up the amount of zinc in the body to help fight off nasty viruses.
Pumpkin seeds make a tasty snack and work well in salads too. They can be found dried and packaged in many markets and grocery stores across the country.

5. Almonds
Almonds bring a unique flavor and texture while offering loads of vitamin E. Did you know that just one-fourth of a cup of almonds has 41 percent of the recommended daily value of vitamin E? This is not only great for immune health, but also healthy skin and eyes. Almonds also contain healthy fats and proteins, all part of a well-balanced diet.
Convenient for snacks, almonds also pair well with certain dinner dishes. Sliced almonds can be added as the crust for baked fish, chicken, or your favorite meat substitute.

4. Broccoli
Along with spinach, broccoli will retain its nutrients best through eating it fresh or lightly cooked. These cute little “trees” bring a lot to the table, including antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals, as well as fiber for good gastrointestinal health.
Lightly steam the florets or serve on a tray of fresh veggies with your favorite veggie dip. Broccoli is also a favorite in soups in the wintertime with some yummy cheese.

3. Spinach

Spinach gives you multitudes of antioxidants and beta carotene, iron, folate, vitamins A and C, magnesium, fiber, and lots more. Those old Popeye cartoons were accurate in their portraying of the hero’s favorite fuel. A robust and very flexible part of a senior’s diet, spinach is excellent on its own in fresh salads but is particularly delightful in a light stir fry with a little olive oil, chicken, shrimp, or veggie sausage, as well as other veggies (or even topped off with fruits!).

2. Garlic

Garlic, a species of the onion genus, Allium, is one of the most prolific additions to stir-fries, sauces, sautés, and more. Its savory flavor and pungent smell showcase the strength in these small cloves, bringing the organic sulfur compound allicin that acts as another valuable option on your immune-boosting team.
Stick with cloves and not the powder for your delicious dishes such as vegetable and chicken stir-fries, roasted whole cloves with olive oil in the oven, or sauté it with greens such as collards or spinach for a double dose of strength.

1. Blueberries

These tasty, brightly colored berries may be small, but they sure are mighty! They are rich in polyphenols — natural antioxidants that serve to strengthen the immune system while improving heart health. With vitamin B6 and C, as well as fiber, potassium, and folate, blueberries can reduce cholesterol and protect against diabetes too.
Blueberries are not only great for breakfast with oatmeal, yogurt, or cereal, but are also yummy with a fresh spring salad with a lite vinaigrette dressing.

Boost Your Immune System
Strong bodies play a significant role in fighting off viruses. The health of our immune system is vital all-year-long, but particularly crucial when viruses are going around in schools, workplaces, and all kinds of public spaces.
Maintaining a diverse diet with lots of antioxidants and vitamins goes a long way to strengthen your immune system and ward off sickness. It can also help you recover faster and reduce the severity of your symptoms if you do get sick.
Some excellent immune-boosting foods and spices to keep in your refrigerator and pantry include:
• Colorful berries – blueberries, strawberries, raspberries, and blackberries
• Garlic, turmeric, lemon, and ginger
• Bone broth
• Citrus fruits
• Spinach and broccoli
• Legumes
Buy organic and much as possible, and be creative with your recipes to enliven your taste buds and reinforce consistent healthy eating habits.

Protect Your Face
The sensitive membranes in your eyes, nose, and mouth provide viruses easy access into your system. If you haven’t washed your hands, avoid touching your face. Some people may have a habit of rubbing their eyes or biting their fingernails when they are nervous, but these habits can provide a freeway for viruses to flow into your body and get you really sick.
Avoid any close contact with sick people, and if you do get sick — stay home.

Start a Creative Project
You don’t have to be an artist to create art. The value in individual creations is all about the trying. Whether the medium you choose is paint, colored pencils, markers, playdough, decoupage, or otherwise, making something unique can be great therapy. Go solo or bring your kids into the mix. Facetime your best friend and do themed projects. Making something can be a great way for kids (and adults!) to get their feelings out when they can’t (or don’t feel like) expressing them.
You can also take the opportunity to start a bigger creative project when you’re practicing social distancing. Do you have old boxes of family photos you’ve meant to do something with? Have you always wanted to try scrapbooking or writing poetry? There are endless possibilities.
