Here, Dr. Klein is removing her patient’s epidermoid cyst. These cysts are usually harmless, but sometimes they can cause discomfort as they grow, especially depending on where they’re located on the body. Epidermoid cysts usually look like a raised, round bump - if you touch it, you can feel the cyst wall and kind of roll the cyst around under the skin. That cyst wall is made of skin cells found in the epidermis and expands down into the second layer of skin, the dermis. The cyst wall makes keratin, the protein found in skin, hair and nails (that’s the white “stuff” you see coming out of the incision when Dr. Klein squeezes).
The patient will have some stitches for 7-10 days and be left with a minimal scar.
