Minimize Trauma~
The trauma of being abused is more than any child deserves. Butterfly Bridge CAC exists to minimize that trauma and help rebuild little lives shattered by abuse. Butterfly Bridge, Children’s Advocacy Center offers a non-threatening environment where a multidisciplinary team works together to minimize any further trauma during the justice and restoration process. One Time, One Place~
Instead of having to be interviewed multiple times by different agencies and attorneys, children are able to tell their story once, and the information is then shared among appropriate parties. As the process moves along, the child may receive counseling and other services in this same, non-threatening, nourishing environment.

Behind the Wings

This sweet picture was drawn by a child during their forensic interview — a heartwarming tribute to faculty dog, Zurg.

Facility dogs like Zurg are specially trained through the HERO HERO - Alabama's Courthouse Facility Dog Program and Canine Companions to provide comfort and reassurance to children during forensic interviews, therapy sessions, and even in court.

Zurg’s gentle presence brings a sense of calm and safety, reminding each child that they are cared for and supported on their path to healing.

🎃 Halloween Safety Tips from Butterfly Bridge CAC 👻

Halloween is a time for fun—but safety comes first! Here are some tips to keep your little trick-or-treaters safe this year:

1️⃣ Bright & Visible Costumes
Choose light-colored or reflective costumes.
Add reflective tape or glow sticks so kids are visible to drivers.
2️⃣ Safe Trick-or-Treating
Stick to familiar neighborhoods with well-lit streets.
Go in groups or with an adult for younger children.
Only approach homes that have lights on.
3️⃣ Check Treats Before Eating
Inspect candy for tampering or allergens.
Avoid homemade treats from strangers.
4️⃣ Mind the Streets
Cross streets at crosswalks and always look both ways.
Walk on sidewalks whenever possible.
5️⃣ Stay Connected
Have a charged phone handy.
Set a curfew for older kids going out in the neighborhood.

✨ Tip: Halloween is about joy, costumes, and candy—keeping safety in mind helps everyone have a fun, worry-free night!

Continuing Education for Brighter Futures

This week, Hannah and Kiarra attended Forensic Interviewer Training at the National Children’s Advocacy Center (NCAC) — a global leader in the field for decades.

Forensic interviewing is a vital and specialized role at the heart of the Children’s Advocacy Center model. These interviews ensure that children have a safe, supportive environment to share their experiences—helping multidisciplinary teams seek truth while minimizing trauma.

We’re proud of Hannah and Kiarra’s dedication to growing their expertise and continuing to strengthen the mission of Butterfly Bridge CAC to provide hope, healing, and justice for child victims.

Understanding the Cognitive Behavior Triangle

At Butterfly Bridge, we often talk about how our thoughts, feelings, and behaviors are all connected — this is known as the Cognitive Behavior Triangle.

💭 Thoughts → what we tell ourselves
💖 Feelings → the emotions that come from those thoughts
✨ Behaviors → the actions that follow

When children learn to recognize how these three areas influence one another, they begin to understand why they feel and act the way they do — and how to make positive changes.

That’s the power behind Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TFCBT), which helps kids find healing, hope, and brighter days ahead.

👻 Want to learn more? Our latest Behind the Wings podcast episode busts the myth that therapy is scary! Join Ashley and Anna as they talk about the real benefits of TFCBT and how it supports children on their healing journey.

Educate | Alabama Network of Children’s Advocacy Centers Annual Training

Last week, several members of our Butterfly Bridge CAC team attended the Alabama Network of Child Advocacy Centers (ANCAC) Annual Training!

Our staff participated in valuable sessions focused on Mental Health, Forensic Interviews, MDT collaboration, and Family Advocacy — all designed to strengthen our response and care for child victims and their families.
We’re especially proud of our Lead Family Advocate, Ashton, who had the honor of serving on a panel to share her expertise and experiences with others across the state. 💙

Continued learning helps us provide the highest quality services for the children and families we serve.
