This is the smarter way.

I thought rowing harder would fix everything.

(This was the erg room in college. Depressing, right?)

For years, it seemed like the only solution to plateauing my 2k was:
Row harder.
Push through the fatigue.

And yeah, my practice sessions would improve.

But it turns out that it doesn't matter how fast you were at practice if you don't get faster on race day.

And I was constantly stuck.

Until I followed a program where my practice splits were based off my current 2k.
My training became prescriptive.
My training sessions were about appropriate intensity.
My fatigue was manageable.

And my confidence to get faster and stronger on the 2k was certain.

Once I stopped chasing exhaustion and started training efficiently, everything changed.

🔥My splits dropped
🔥My recovery sped up
🔥My improvement was guaranteed

If you've been rowing hard every practice but not getting faster, there's a smarter way:

How I got started with online fitness coaching ....

In March 2022 - I'm stuck inside like everyone else.

My business is closed (I run a brick and mortar private gym), I'm working all day trying to pivot my business into something workable, and I'm splitting the day with my wife watching our two year old, who doesn't have daycare.
As the days tick away, the frustration and stress grow and even though I'm a fitness professional, my body is getting pudgier.
You would think I wouldn't have a problem staying in shape knowing everything I do about nutrition and training.
But the reality is - even though I'm not eating terribly, I'm just slowly packing on the pounds.

When I look back at it, this issue with my weight and how I looked and felt all started when my schedule went from routine to "ALL HANDS ON DECK".
New stresses were added to my life and my normal routines and workouts were thrown into the trash.
I got lazy and thought I could take my attention off my fitness for a while I was putting out fires.....I started intuitively eating. ..I thought I was putting in enough effort to eating healthy during the day..I was drinking more in the evenings to distract from the stress of the day

How'd all of this get resolved?
During all of this, I was in constant contact with other gym owners who were also going through the same thing.
The gym owners who were doing better than others were telling me that they invested in an online coach to help them ACTUALLY get their training and nutrition back on point.
Even better - their businesses improved and their relationships improved because of the skills they learned with this coach....

Fast forward - I sign up with a coach (all remotely btw - he was in Seattle and I'm in Pittsburgh).
After a slow onramp period, my weight starts melting off. I ended up dropping close to 30 lbs and got the leanest I've been since college rowing racing season (20 years ago).
I realize that I had all the best intentions with my fitness.....and I had all the knowledge....
but bridging the gap between intention and ex*****on was something I was missing.

And I wasn't doing anything crazy - no weird food timing strategies, no special supplements, no endless workout regiments - and I was still eating the foods I loved.

It was incredible to see how small, focused changes to my diet, to my training, or to my mindset made incredible changes to my health.

If you've been stuck in your health but can't figure out why, I would love to guide you through a similar process and get you some amazing results from focused but simple efforts.

It'll save you months of trial and error and get you the results you know you deserve.

If you're looking to invest in your health look freaking great and want the guidance from an experienced coach who knows what it's like - send me the message "Results" and we'll discuss what a plan could look like for you.

How I got started with online fitness coaching ....

In March 2022 - I'm stuck inside like everyone else.

My business is closed (I run a brick and mortar private gym), I can't workout like usual, I'm working all day trying to pivot my business into something workable, and I'm splitting the day with my wife watching our two year old, who doesn't have daycare.
As the days tick away, the frustration and stress grow and I try to distract myself from it by drinking more in the evening. My eating is haphazard because I'm trying to put my focus on my work.

My two big rocks - my family and my business - are getting all of my attention.
My health - a major part of my identity - sucks and I'm looking more and more soft, squishy, and completely out of shape.
You would think that I wouldn't have a problem staying in shape considering how much I know about nutrition and losing weight.

I got lazy and thought I could take my attention off my fitness for a while I was putting out fires.....I started intuitively eating. ..I thought I was putting in enough effort to eating healthy during the day..I was making my own food, which I thought was better than most people
But apparently I just opened up the flood gates for getting out of shape quick.

How'd all of this get resolved?
During all of this, I was in constant contact with other gym owners who were also going through the same thing.
The gym owners who were doing better than others were telling me that they invested in an online coach to help them ACTUALLY get their training and nutrition back on point.
Even better - their businesses improved and their relationships improved....

What was the secret then?

I knew so much about training and nutrition, there definitely wasn't something they would tell me that would "change the game."
..But the fact of the matter was - what I was doing wasn't working and I wanted to see what it actually looked like to get this under control and what it would take to get "ripped."

Fast forward - I sign up with a coach (all remotely btw - he was in Seattle and I'm in Pittsburgh). I start off with a baseline week of tracking and building awareness of what's going on in my life and we then jump into a fat loss period.
I realize that I had all the best intentions with my fitness.....and I had all the knowledge....
but bridging the gap between intention and ex*****on was something I was missing.

Not only did I need to ACTUALLY do some basic habits, but I needed to do them in the right order.

On top of that, because I was stuck inside, I needed to adjust my expectations for how long everything was going to take.

Basically, all of the things I was telling my clients, I wasn't doing myself. And getting a coach to get myself out of my own head and to actually take the correct action at the right time really started helping me stack wins. I invested in my health - which meant I was actually paying attention to it (both literally and figuratively).

It was incredible to see how small, focused changes to my diet, to my training, or to my mindset made incredible changes to my health.
I was in awe of how powerful focused change was to my physique and it was powerful for all of my remote clients who started to benefit from my new tools and implementation.

I ended up dropping close to 30 lbs and got the leanest I've been since college rowing racing season (20 years ago).

Ever kick yourself over eating a donut when you know it's bad for your diet?

It's pretty easy to think of donuts as "bad" because, in the long term, overeating donuts can lead to weight gain, etc

But in the short term, eating donuts is pretty awesome.

And most actions can be thought of in terms of short, medium, and long term results.

In fact, if you look at working out, in the short term - working out is very uncomfortable. It's only until the long term results are examined that we say "working out is good for you...."

So....

Why do you struggle with eating a donut?

Anyone have some thoughts?

Under promise
Over deliver

What would be more awesome?

Hey! My goal was to lose 12 lbs and I lost over 20!

Or…

We’ll, I was hoping to lose 25 lbs but I came up a few lbs short…

Same weight lost
Completely different attitude

So, set yourself up for success next time

Double the time
Cut in half the goal

Anything you do above that goal is all gravy.

Plus it builds confidence in your ability to execute

“Do your best.
When you know better - do better.”

Your week is tough.

Don’t make it any harder by lugging around old ideas around what’s good for you or what’s going to get you into shape when you’ve grown and evolved.

Drop those ideas like 8th grade Spanish and move on with your life.

If anyone mentions…

“Hey! I thought you were on that Keto diet….”

Just say, “I’m not doing strictly Keto anymore. I’ve been tweaking my diet as I need to, and strict Keto doesn’t work for me anymore.”

Obviously, insert any diet or workout myth you’re now no longer adhering to.

Life’s too short to stick with extreme diet dogma.

Here’s something I wish I knew before I was 35…

For years, embarrassingly enough, I didn’t like to eat chicken and rice.

It was bland…
The texture was soft…
It wasn’t pretty to look at…
And it was a burden to eat when I was eating diet food.

Same thing with broccoli or cauliflower.

But…
-and here’s the lesson-

Was it the chickens fault that I couldn’t cook?

You see, I had fallen into the paradoxical trap of thinking cooking was an inherent talent —> and I didn’t have it.

And the simpler foods I made being exponentially more disgusting, I told myself that cooking good food want in the cards for me.

But here’s the solution so you can learn faster than me:

1. Pick the food you want to enjoy
2. Find a recipe that allows for a lot of error while still resulting in good tasting food
3. Make that recipe for weeks on end, tweaking your process slightly every week until you nail the recipe you enjoy

I mean, why would anyone try a new recipe once, not enjoy the outcome, and never try again?

It makes no sense.

Yet, that’s what I did for years.

Be better than me.

After watching hundreds of people get started in their fitness journey, i can pinpoint a very specific time during the first day of a new program.

It’s that point where they’re stuck at a fork in the road…

And they’re presented with a choice:

Do you want to learn how to get in better shape?

Or…

do you want to avoid the embarrassment of being a beginner?

And I can see when people choose to learn or, not surprisingly, try to do both…

(If you had chosen the second choice, you would’ve not started the program, but I digress…)

And it reminds me of Ron Swanson’s timeless quote, “Never half-ass two things. Whole ass one thing.”

So, get in there.

Be a beginner.

Feel the nerves of your first day.

And start that journey towards the best version of you.

You got this.

Do you ACTUALLY gain 10 lbs of fat after Thanksgiving?

It may feel like it.
And morning is definitely a little rough getting back into the swing of things.

But let’s go into a little of what’s actually happening…
